TWO New Basses Have Arrived! | The Janek Gwizdala Podcast #317

As 2025 gets well and truly underway I have so many music-related things to be thankful for and excited about.

My latest album, Mystery to Me – 20th Anniversary Edition, is now available for pre-order on vinyl. It’s the first album in 20 years of releasing music as an artist that I’m having pressed to vinyl, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Pre-Order the new vinyl release here: https://janekgwizdala.myshopify.com/products/mystery-to-me-20th-anniversary-edition-vinyl

Two beautiful new instruments have just arrived! One is my limited edition collaboration with RKM, the other is the evolution of my Mattisson 5-string that is now hollow-body, headless, and passive!

Watch and listen to this week’s episode and get samples of the new instruments, details of the new vinyl release, and a ton of tour dates coming up over the next few months.

  • That “reverse P” neck pickup route is how I was going to do my next 5 string build.

  • Love this video! I live and gig in the Eastern Colorado area (Denver, Colorado Springs, Boulder) and really wish there was a store that I could try several of these boutique basses at. I really love the sounds I hear and the selling points that are described about these amazing instruments but struggle to justify spending that kind of dough when I haven't tried enough to know what would best fit my sound/playing style. I know NAMM is an option (I met you there in 2020 before COVID) but it's a bit overwhelming in terms of the amount of people and sound in the building.

My question is, is there a place you would recommend going/traveling so that I could feel comfortable trying out many boutique basses and brands in a chill environment?????????

  • Hello Janek, is there any chance of seeing you here in Germany in the coming months? ideally in conjunction with a workshop or clinic. think about ????

  • Oh man, this new Mattisson sounds very organically, it resonates beautifuly, it's so clear and warm, what an instrument. I'd take it to some big room like a church or something and record it solo.????
Btw – I just started to listen to Nevermind Tomorrow and it sounds awesome, a lot of great playing and you sound superb as always, what a groove!

  • After one of your videos, I was under the impression that you were thinning your bass collection & were just going to use a few basses. Am I missing something. Nice instruments though

  • I've been wondering what the Gwizonado was going to be like since you mentioned in the one bass for life video last year, was not expecting headless 5-string. The tone is fantastic, clarity is off the charts. Something about the tone makes me want to hear it as a fretless for some reason. Also, I blame you and Ian and that Coronado for me picking up an old Ovation Typhoon hollowbody ????.

  • ????????New RKM looks great! Looks like you swapped the bridge pickup for something different than what’s on the prototype.

  • That RKM is absolutely stunning.I'm not really comfortable on a 5-string but damn if this bass doesn't make me want to give it a try again.

  • I’m having a custom bass built right now that I wanted strung E-C. I got to ask, where did you find P pickups that work for this setup? Meaning for E-C.
    VERY COOL! Love the tone.

  • ???? Also love your playing. I can't wait to get my hands on some of your books and getting some practice time going through them. Keep up the playing and the podcast!

  • Very good to see a bassist of his level testing a headless instrument, it is still a taboo this type of instrument in the middle of musicians despite existing since the 80s. The sound of this Mattison is beautiful.

  • I really loved the new Mattisson … Sounds so organic and suits perfect your music … Cant wait to listen more of this bass from your hands

  • Hey Janek! Lately I’ve seen the low/high action debate coming up again. What is the current measurements of your string action? Cheers from Portugal ????

  • ???? i love the finish on that base. The one that looks chocolatey.???? but they both so phenomenal. Well you make a sound phenomenal.

  • You should see if you can connect with Ellis from LEH Guitars when you are in Portland! Super awesome builder who just released a 24 fret I feel like you would really enjoy

  • Loved checking out the RKM and chatting with you a bit at NAMM. I was playing “guess the weight” with you. Come back through Denver!

  • ???? Such beautiful basses Janek! That Mattison is stunning and sounds soo good! That’s definitely you love the 26 frets. the RKM is a monster it has such good tones! The black hardware is perfect! Congrats on the vinyl presses!

  • Not gonna lie, pretty jealous of that combo. Absolute studio weapon, and a purpose built machine!

  • ???? you need a solve a problem for me that you created. In November I put away my pbass and fretted jazz bass to begin a year long mission of only playing fretless jazz bass. And now you taunt us with the RKM which I very much would like to try. Do I abandon the original plan and embrace GAS? Buy the rkm and store it for a year? Or do I say eff-this and stick to the original plan?

  • I assume that the post Namm hang was good because of no Sunday Namm? Looking forward to meeting you in London in June 🙂 ????

  • Hi Janek, will there be a 10 year anniversary re-recording of American Elm??? I would love a trio or quartet orquestatuon with your actual sound

  • Absolutely love that Mattisson – do you find it being more of a chore to restring the headless? Love the content as always ????
