Tyler Bryant on How to Leave Home and Start a Rock Band

Huge shocker incoming: Zach Broyles made a Tube Screamer. The Mythos Envy Pro Overdrive is Zach’s take on the green apple of his eye, with some special tweaks including increased output, more drive sounds, and a low-end boost option. Does this mean he can clear out his collection of TS-9s? Of course not.

This time on Dipped in Tone, Rhett and Zach welcome Tyler Bryant, the Texas-bred and Nashville-based rocker who has made waves with his band the Shakedown, who Rhett credits as one of his favorite groups. Bryant, it turns out, is a TS-head himself, having learned to love the pedal thanks to its being found everywhere in Texas guitar circles.

Bryant shares how he scraped together a band after dropping out of high school and moving to Nashville, including the rigors of 15-hour drives for 30-minute sets in a trusty Ford Expedition. He’s lived the dream (or nightmare, depending on the day) and has the wisdom to show it.

Throughout the chat, the gang covers modeling amps and why modern rock bands still need amps on stage; the ins and outs of recording-gear rabbit holes and getting great sounds; and the differences between American and European audiences. Tune in to hear it all.

  • Loved this episode. Ya’ll should see about getting Jack White on here. Especially with his Fender releases coming out. That PanoVerb might be the end all to beat all amp. It sounds glorious

  • Tyler is awesome. One of my fav guitar players. He is becoming a go-to producer. He’s fun and honest in his storytelling. I think he’s wearing his pajamas during this podcast. Lol

  • I’m a French sound guy, and I had the honor to mix Tyler and his band when they played in Paris at « Le Divan Du Monde » a few years ago. The sound coming out of the stage was so balanced and clear that I had little to do to make it sounds good. It was a very great night. That kind of band always make me feel that I´m good at my job.

  • Great interview! Love Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown, and Larkin Poe.

I’m 40 and have a wife and kids so I can’t really hop in a van and pursue having a band but regret not having done so when I was younger. Life got in the way, my dreams have changed a bit and it’s never too late to pursue dreams so I’m building my brand, and pursuing college while being a husband and father! As the avett brothers proclaimed in Head full of Doubt/Road full of Promise… “Decide what to be and go be it”!

  • So cool to see Tyler. I know I’m super late to the table but I found Tyler about a year ago. The Shakedown has quickly become one of my favorite bands. And just damn cool dudes. I would love to see you guys out in San Diego someday.

  • Tyler is the best. Seen him play a couple of times and met him after one of the shows. He was super nice and my daughter still remembers him as the "first real singer she ever met"! I find it amazing how much recognition he gets from legendary guitar players (Beck, Gibbons…) as the real deal, yet still is not widely known.

  • Musicians being able to hear, share the live stage sound experience like the audience does is a connection, an interaction on an intimate level. That directs the feel, and overall vibe of the show.

  • I can't even afford a place to live by myself let alone the gear I want, which isn't much man, just a good tube amp a few pedals and an american made guitar. Tyler kicks serious ass, and is a very cool dude plus his wife and sister in law are great too❤

  • Right on guys, I clicked instantly for T B. I'm trying to warm up to the two geeks running the show though, so bring out Tyler and stop tickling each other's beards.

  • Tyler, throw a treble boost in front of the pignose and it's Frank Zappa's tone on Black Napkins

  • Here's a suggestion for those struggling with IEMs. Get molds and try the Ambient version. You can attenuate how much room you let in. Even if you are at the mercy of different engineers every show, it will give you more flexibility.

  • Tyler is massively underrated he’s a great musician/guitar slinger that needs more credit/attention for his music and chops!????
