UB46: Do Speakers Really Make A Difference? Neo Creamback, Greenback, G12 V Type & Custom Celestion
UB46 Do Speakers Really Make A Difference? Neo Creamback, Greenback, G12 V Type & Custom Celestion Speakers Test.
The Celestion Creamback and Greenback are classic speakers and much loved by guitar players down through the decades. In this video I bring a number of Celestion Speakers together for a side by side comparison. It’s not a highly technical test, just simply… can you hear the difference?
Once you get your guitar collection sorted out, amplifiers will be next on the list and following that, the search for pedals to enhance tone and special effects. For some, that search for tone does not end there and so the hunt is on for the right speaker or speakers that will do justice to the rest of your gear.
In this video I look at a number of speakers I have in the studio, that being, a Neodymium Celestion Creamback, a Celestion Greenback, a Celestion G12 V-Type and a Celestion Custom Make designed for Bad Cat Amplification.
As I recently took delivery of a Grossmann FATBOX Isolation cabinet I am able to easily and quickly switch-out speakers with consistent accurate mic placement using a Sure SM57 and a Sennheiser MD421 II and the differences can be clearly heard. So in answer to the question… do speakers really make a difference… in some cases… they certainly do.
In my own tests, it has been interesting to hear how tone is affected when aligning different amplifiers and various speakers which can very much alter the tonal quality of a given effects pedal.
Ultimately, speaker choices paired with digital or valve amplifiers should be considered in regard to the type of music being played. It’s true that the most expensive product does not always mean it will be the best tool for the job, however in this particular test the most expensive speaker (Celestion Bad Cat) for me at least… had a quality and depth all its own… what do you think? Enjoy!

very nice comparison thanks! can you also use microphones horizontally on the Grossmann iso box? like for example a senheiser E-906
Well of course they do ~ der!
For my style of play, rockabilly, the V type is the go too, nice high end, I could get great twang out of it. Not a fan of the cream or green.
Another excellent video, very interesting. I recently built a low-wattage combo using a Peavey Sheffield 1230, which sounds bright and clear, just how I wanted it. (I'm actually using it with an electric acoustic, with lots of effects.) I wish I had a rig like that to compare speakers! ????
I'm short, yes. May look at getting one of these in the future. The Bad Cat sounds so full and clear.
To my ears, it's all in the breakup. Your greenback is a heavy magnet version, not a medium (medium would have less transient on the cleans, smoothing that out, and also a sweeter top end when breaking up). The modern greenback reissues, like the neodymium speakers, have far too much treble, not to mention incoherent treble, in their breakup. That's why I use either vintage speakers or Mojotone British Vintage series: because the modern reissues by Celestion and others sound just right until they breakup, and then they all become far too harsh and bright.
I have always liked Celestion's custom Bad Cat speaker, it's so robust and smooth up top, but I think your Bad Cat amp needs an alnico speaker because of where its string sound sits, which happens to be right at the place where you can hear a ceramic magnet. It's hard to describe, something between 1khz and 10, something about the transient, I wish I could articulate it. But I have an old pair of Eminence Red Fang built for Dr. Z alnico 10s that would make that amp sing.
I don't happen to think any of those 3 speakers are ideal for your plexi either unfortunately, particularly the neo. My plexi is currently loaded with an M65 creamback on top and a Mojotone BV25m on bottom; medium magnets for a sweeter top end and more compression because plexi circuits are harsh enough without adding a G12H30 to the mix! And the neo cream is the harshest of all. However since your cab is a 1×12, if you do replace the speaker in your Bad Cat, try the Bad Cat speaker in the Marshall cab. I think that would work. A Fane A60 is what I would personally choose for your Bad Cat head. Speakers are my thing. I'm into a lot of things, but 12" guitar speakers may be my strongest subject — just for context to add perceived weight to my recommendations here. I used to mix a medium magnet and heavy magnet in the plexi, but now I have a separate cab for the H speakers, and it's not usually plugged in because they have so much bass and treble. Anyhoo!
Definitely the right speaker for your Bad cat. Greenback sounded quite bad with its weird midrange. I think Greenback is a very overrated speaker except in Marshall’s. (Besides: great editing work as always
