  • What Thomann is doing with Harley Benton is great. There was a danger that people would no longer be able to afford to make music because of the price of instruments. Thomann has saved the world of young musicians, so to speak, and opened the eyes of others at the same time.

  • I was undecided about this one or JB-62… Finally I got the JB-62 and my back was totally horrified about the weight with 10,30 pounds (4,7kg). I assume that the jazz bass guitars are always heavy…

Great, now I have to clean the coffee I just spit up all over myself. ????

  • Just discovered Harley Benton’s instruments thanks to your reviews and I’ve gotta say I’m truly impressed. Btw I’ve become a big fan of your reviews, greetings from Mexico

  • In my opinion, the Bassguitar that Harley Benton should release next is : A Precision fretless bass, without fret markers..

  • Just got my Harley Benton J- bass in seafoam for under $200 shipped- DO NOT HASITATE IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUYING, THESE HAVE NO BUSINESS IN THE SUB $200s. The only thing I swapped out was the white pick guard, looked good in the pic but boring when I got it in my hands..so I threw on a tortoise shell pic guard..I like it 25% better- but that's just personal preference! Can't wait to throw on dome fresh Ernie Ball super slinky- but the one it came with sound really good!!

  • Awesome video. I'm interested in their new 25 anniversary version. This one is almost the same configuration, so the tones should be the same. This demo helped me with my decision!

  • Pretty sure, as you said, caramelized is just a light roast, think of the bad quality control on the kiesel roasted maple necks & you basically get caramelized

  • i just ordered by j-bass from HB and i have decently good expectations as i have seen a lot of good comments – if HB considered doing a dingwall-style bass and a gibson ripper-grabber-g3 they would probably corner the market for people who don't want to drop 2k-3k minimum for the originals

  • Hey, man… I hope this isn't bothering you, but… you should try putting Johnny Brook strings on this bass.

  • anyone here have an opinion on how this compares to the squier classic vibe series? I'm debating on an affordable bass to get back into playing. So far this HB seems better specs wise but I've heard that the hb basses are f*cking heavy compared to normal basses. I'm a les paul player so I'm kinda use to heavy instruments already though

  • Friend used to have this HB jazz bass that he swapped pickups with and did some work on the finish. Blew me away honestly, I liked it more than a American Fender from an shop. I think they perfected use of very good and simple designs and wood choices. Doing stuff with Basswood and maple and so on, woods that are soft and easy to work and cheap, perfect for the typical jazz/p bass stuff. And when they do get a bit fancy It's insane what they can pull out.

Like the HBZ 4000 or whatever they are called. Having Ovangkol wings and whatnot for 300€, stuff you would expect in a 700€+ high end stuff like Warwicks and whatnot.
Just hoping they will make lefty models more, I as a lefty been really eyeing on HB stuff but lack of lefty models is a bit dissapointing.

  • I don't care about the weight. In fact, the heavier a bass is, the more I love it!!

  • Great review as usual Jonny! Really helpful and fun at the same time. Can’t seem to find this color anymore is it discontinued from this model?

  • Alder is supposed to be a decent light wood.
I don’t understand why this bass is so heavy…
They should go for paulownia wood.

  • Truely remarkable how such unqualified players can find a platform now. Fix the electronics with better shielding and use this bass at home as a practice tool or in rehearsal.

  • Im curious on how this one compares to the also newly released PJ models. ???? – That one has all of these same colors available, while this J bass only has 3 left I believe.

  • I have an American Pbass, Jazz and a music man sting ray. Considering adding this to the collection..

  • Hey Jonny! Thanks for this awesome review! I completely agree with the Jaguar suggestion, I'm just on the fence between the surf green version of this one (as the blue is already out of stock…) and the Squier CV Jag in sunburst colour. The latter one has been my target for quite a while, it's a shorter and lighter instrument, but I've never had a JB and everyone is just so hyped about this Harley that I also feel I need one especially for this price. Which one would you choose?

Also, HB just recently released a PJ series with these colours, but a P body, have you had a chance to try those? I'm super curious but there are absolutely zero hands-on reviews available.

    Keep on rockin mate!

  • The weight of these has always been their Achilles heel. I purchased one of their enhanced J's about five years back and the thing weighed almost 12lbs. I reached out to Thomann when these latest J's came out to see if they could send me a lighter one, being in the US returns aren't feasible for a $200 bass, but they said they are automated with the bass selection so they couldn't.

I believe I know why they are so cheap. It must be they ar laminating many pieces of wood to get one body and the glue is running up the weight. I almost thing they'd be better off going with less laminates and using basswood. These basses are so great for the price but I can't get past the insane weights.

  • What tuning are you using? Because there's no way the E string flops around that much as standard tuning and the pressure you're playing at.

  • I hope HB Will do an Mustang bass i the naar future. With matching head stock and racing stripes????
