I have done this and the real Amp portion sounded like crap (just like yours LOL) even setting up without cabinet (like you did) and specially with OD amps, like Marshalls or any other higher gain amp. Fender clean sounded good and that's because I was using the power section of a Blues Deluxe. I found that if I tweaked a lot I could get a decent sound to the amp but then to the FOH it will sound like crap. Then I just starting using the FR-12 only and that has been great.
I've done essentially the same thing with the lower path goung out output 2 to the normal channel of my Deluxe reverb. The upper path using an amp and cabinet sim and going out output 1 to front of house. Works great but part of the reason I got the TMP is so I don't have to haul around a heavy amp. I got an fr10 a few days ago and plan on using it on a gig this weekend.
