Using Guitar Pedals on Vocals – #203 Doctor Guitar

In this episode I upgraded my vocal Pedalboard with a Surfy Industries Surfy Bear Compact, spring reverb unit and I show all the tweaks and tips to use guitar pedals live on vocals.

In a Pedaltrain Nano + I use a JHS Colourbox, an Ibanez Ad Mini analog delay and the brand new Surfy Industries SurfyBear Compact.

I rarely bring a sound engineer with me to the shows, só this helps me to get the tone I want on my vocals. I basically use the same approach on my vocals I use on guitar tone.

If you buy from this links I get a small commission from Amazon.

  • Hi Budda! Great video. I just wanted to ask how you muted the wet fx by bypassing the colorbox? My one sends a signal from both outputs whether byassed or activated so i still get wet fx just without the colorbox color

  • How do I connect everything to the mixer and sound speakers? does it all need to be connected to a mixer? Or can it be connected directly to an amplifier or sound speaker?

  • Great voice! Cool set up. I have a Colour Box v2 that I still need to try w vocals. Would you ever consider adding a compressor pedal pre Colour box?

  • This video is helpful. Im putting together my first vox pedal board. The surfy bear reverb and Ibanez delay sound good. Im not sure the colour box is enough distortion… could be ok. The journey continues.

  • Killer video Budda! Very insightful into how to set up a solid vocal rig. Did you figure out if you get feedback using eq of the colourbox? Curious to know if you had an issues. I've seen vids of live sound engineers where they make a vocal pedalboard with 7 band eq and they show how to find the frequencies that feedback. In that video, he just turned down those specific frequencies. If you could let us know if you had issues with feedback using this rig live, that'd be awesome. Thanks Budda!

  • Hi Budda, great video as always! I wonder how can I achieve this setup without buying the JHS Colour Box, it's a nice tool but quite expensive, specially if I only use it as a vocal live tool. Would a regular DI passive box work similarly combined with a BOSS GE7 and a boost (plus delay and reverb, of course ????????)?

    Thanks man!

  • Nice demo. Thank you. Good strong voice. ☮️

    I just ordered one today & I’m exited to get a better vocal-sound. Plug-ins just aren’t getting-it done.

  • I can't believe some of the shit comments. Thanks for the great information and showing us how you as a professional shape your sound.

  • Great vid ! When running live to you have to use 2 channels on the mixing desk? One for the colour box and one for the delay/reverb and DI?

  • Thank you Budda! I'm rather new to the music scene and I am starting the journey. Earlier this week I was wondering about using a guitar effect pedal for vocals and found this video to be very helpful!

  • I need a help… I have rode videomicro but i wanna use my guitar pedal as an audio interface (I'm using zoom G3X digital multi effect for guitar). But when i connect my microphone to my guitar pedal, I can't hear nothing. What should I do? Thank you..

  • While I agree there's a lot of talking, there's ways you can edit so it stays interesting for everyone. I usually find opening with a sound demo in a mix, then going back and forth between talking and sound demos to be the most engaging. I'm definitely interested in what you have to say, and I like hearing the reasoning behind the choices, but having a short sound clip between paragraphs really helps.
