Van Halen 1984 Brown Sound with Same Rig as Eddie — Live Amp in Studio
Just a fun video playing through my 1984 rig to a Drop Dead Legs backing track found on Youtube. I didn’t embarrass myself trying to play Ed’s outro solo. 🙂
Check out our Kemper and TONEX profiles here: www.topjimi.com
Here are a couple great vids showing how to play this tune:

Sounds great. I bought your EVH Kemper pack some years back, are you going to release a new one with this amp/gear?
it is the g12-80 because the g12t75 is intruduced late 1984 or early 1985
do you plan on making this for amplitude 5
I really love this but I don't have tone X and wanna try it
whats the diffrence between the g12-80 and the g12-80 classic lead
The g12-80 is my favorite celestion of all time. For me, it sounds better than original greenbacks.
beautifullll, great sound
Ooowwhhooaaaa
Damn nailed it!
Awesome Tone, Nice Playing. ????
Nailed it.
Does the 84 rig have a chorus effect added with the pack? Also any chance of a Sammy era pack coming?
1984 was such a great album…any with Dave were great, of course.
Celestion G12-80!
Very cool, Jim????
I have found the same results.
It’s a great VH tone speaker, indeed.
Sounds great. As you know, Ed's tone has been the subject of endless debate. And which tone? VH1? WACF? 1984? Was it Jose? Did he slave a Bandmaster? Did he use a soak? Was it really the variac? All of the above? Unfortunately, we'll never know for sure unless Don Landee – or Wolf – actually tells us. Even then, we probably won't believe it. What I know for sure is people are getting really close using different setups. Yours sounds great. David Bray has an amp that sounds great. And, there are several channels that do a great job as well. My tone, which you can hear on some of my past videos, is inspired by Ed's tone. But it's not Ed's…I gave up trying to get his tone because I just couldn't figure it out at the time.
Its in his fingers and soul. Not a damn amp or guitar. Just like dime. Get over it. You're never gonna get the magic ever again.
Don’t forget, you’re playing a les Paul and your pickups sound alot thinner than eddies guitar. I believe Ed was using a Seymour Jb, or a 59’ in his Kramer around this time in 1984.
Nailed. Nothing else to add.
are you jim gausted from the other channel ? lol
pretty close but a Les Paul is always going to sound thicker than what Ed played due to the short scale.
Sounds great! Is that a lead or bass cone? Have you tried the old marshall 65's? Very woody.
nice tone my guy
Would be amazing to have a hardline neal schon take, great sounds !
You have to when you only have 3 musicians
Sounds amazing! BTW, I still have that Peavey Wolfgang pickup i bought off of you about 5 years ago!????
Great.
Well played
Superb
You converted a 54?!
Well done ????????????????????????
