Scales, along with arpeggios, are the fundamental building blocks of melodies. This connection, however, is not often obvious due to how we learn scales – one octave; straight up, straight down. By making variations on Billy Sheehan’s “Beast” exercise, we can make this connection clearer while using the entire length of the bass.
Although this exercise is performed on bass in the video, it can certainly be played on any instrument (guitar, piano, mandolin, etc.). Give it a try!

Nice variation on the Billy Sheehan exercise! Very challenging and helpful. But, I believe that YouTuber, Josh Fossgreen actually named the exercise “The Beast”
Recently watched your Tarantula exercise video and immediately subscribed. Awesome content, sir!
Amazing exercise dude! You ask all the right questions to yourself when you're practicing and you bring them to the table for all of us to enjoy! Thanks!
Thanks a lot!
Dude with all due respect, your lessons are great but you have to mic your bass. I can barely hear the low notes. I don't have speakers available…
For a continuation of this idea, watch Juan alderete's instructional video here on youtube.
