Video Review – Carvin BX500 Bass Head & BR410 Cab

http://www.premierguitar.com PG’s Dan Berkowitz walks us through a video review of the Carvin BX500 and BR410 cabinet. The amp is a 500 watt, Class D head, which weighs a meager six pounds. The tiny head’s dimensions are 3″x9″x14″ and the preamp is a 3-stage, Class A, which features one 12AX7 tube. The front panel knobs include Contour, Bass, Compressor, Treble, Master Volume and a 9-band EQ.

The BR410 cabinet is made of a cross grain laminated multi-ply plywood and features internal bracing to eliminate cab resonance. It comes loaded with four heavy-duty, 200w 10″ woofers, 1″ Titanium HF driver.

  • Ya man..that microphone? The volume of the cab is making it bounce because you don't have the mic on a stand..instead it is just hanging there with duct tape? So if it bounces..the tone rattles and is more distorted than the amp actually is.

  • Not a good review at all, although a great piece of equipment – the Carvin review with Daryll Williams & Phil Martin is a review, and these cats can play!

  • You suck! Put some new strings on your dead ass bass so we can hear what the amp can do. You have no business doing bass amp or anything bass reviews.

  • Please stop posting reviews for basses or bass equipment Mr Berkowitz. Why? Well, let me put it this way: YOU CAN'T PLAY.

  • Once again we see a demo from someone that cant play for shit. Half of the crap sound is from his bad playing. the other half I believe is from bad recording .

  • Check 3:30 where he says "now I'm going to engage the tube" and reaches around the back. I take that to mean everything after that is WITH the tube preamp.

  • I think the guy actually turn off the tube preamp, he's a little mixed up .LOL

  • @TheBadAssKiller looks like they recorded this with an e609 in the center of the speaker. that's a pretty low bass combination for a bass cab mic technique

  • @chrisharper78 Thats really strange cause we have had nothing but the best from Carvin customer service. Even covered some gear that was past warranty that we broke. Only had to pay shipping. Its a bummer you had such a bad experience. I have heard this about there customer service before though. Maybe we're just fortunate.

  • Why is the amp distorting near the end of the video when he adds more low mids in the graphic eq? I heard another clip that did the same thing, it couldn't be that loud, the master was down pretty far. My question is, is this good or not for a live stage situation, like outdoor events and such. No one demonstrated pumping some real drive through it with larger cabinets like for a rock concert. Just like Fuchs demo's everything is jazz related using tens but I'm a rocker, will it crank for rock?

  • I own this ampand I'm using it with an Amp 4x10HLF cab. It sounds great. This NOT an amp one should use for rock (the B2000 is more suited for it). Whend you purchase an amp with this much versatility, you Must know how to use it. IMO if someone blows thsi amp out,you either don't know how to use it,or you bought the wrong amp for your application. Thsi amp is loud (I can hardly play it over 3 or 4.Carvin makes very good equiptment,I know,I've had jsut about most of the bass equipptment mfgs.

  • I'm not sure about a fully overdriven tone because that's not my sound. A slightly overdriven tone it can provide. It is versatile eq wise and tweak wise and I like the BX500. However after a week it started hissing and losing some power ant tone. I sent it back to Carvin and am awaiting a replacement. That sucks.

  • This guy is too light of a player to really test the amp right. It sounds alright now, but i can imagine if someone with a heavier finger attack played it, it would sound much better. He didn't even test it using a slap/pop technique or anything. It would shed more positive light on the amp if it had a better all around review with different playing styles.

  • It's not his bass. It's the player. I ordered and am waiting for the amp to arrive.

  • I am not conviced. I cant make an opinion. Firstly the guys playing is mostly staccato, I wouldnt set my eq's like that, and I doubt the microphone he used is suitable for a bass cabinet. I didnt hear much bottom coming from this amp. I want to know how it sounds, because the price and the features are appealing to me, but will it sound good ?

  • The BX500 sounds much better in person. While it does not sound that great when everything is set to the centered position, once you do some minor tweaking the head really comes alive. I'm running mine through two Avatar SB112s and it sounds monstrous. The low end is fierce.

    It's a terrific head.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but the DEFAULT is for the tube to be ON and, if you push in the Tube Bypass switch, the Tube circuit is bypassed. Since you apparently got this backwards, does this mean that most of this demo is with the tube bypassed?
