Warren Haynes Talks Guitar Tone, Pedals & Playing [Plus – Will He Like The Rig We Put Together?]

The Gov’t Mule & Allman Brothers Band guitarist & singer joins us at Schwangri-La

Welcome to the show. We are thrilled to be joined by Warren Haynes, former Allman Brother and very much current Gov’t Mule! Warren has a stellar reputation as a guitarist, singer and songwriter, not to mention as a tonesmith and appreciator of all things good when it comes to six strings.
He was en route back to the US following some tour dates in Europe, so he stopped in to TPS to hang out and get some tones going.
Warren didn’t have any gear with him – it was all in transit – so he picked up Dan’s Les Paul as his fave of the TPS bunch, and we put a rig together that somewhat resembles the kind of stuff he would typically use. As you’ll hear, fun was had… Enjoy the show!

Big thanks to Jim Walsh for making this happen – cheers buddy!

  • I was incredibly lucky to see him in the concert in Madrid. It had been years since I heard something so GLORIOUS, and this video is amazing. Congratulations!

  • I didn't know of Warren before this….I can't thank you enough for having him on. He just took me to the next 3 levels…

  • My buddy in Nville played a lot of AMAZING SOUNDING Slide on a Fender ToughDog Tele. Some of the prettiest music I’ve ever heard.

  • He's into just as much good new stuff as he is the good old stuff. What a well spoken, down to earth, inspiring gentleman!

  • Warren is so knowledgeable and fortunately just as articulate, with talent through the roof. ✌️

  • Rotosphere for the win! Seriously, Warren Haynes is quickly becoming one of my favorite guitarists because he so graciously shares everything about his gear, his settings, his band and life experiences, all the while as a gentleman.

  • When I am playing an amplifier without reverb and don’t have a reverb pedal – I think delay pedals can be set up to give a good reverb simulation

  • The joy in this episode was palpable… and it had a lot to do with how personable you all were with each other. Favorite moment: Let's see what it sounds like, slide through that envelope filter. Pure, enthusiastic, childlike experimentation. Man, we need to remember that. He used tools like a pro to be ready to be inspired. Thank you gentlemen… needed this.

  • Big Wal! An actual legend, what a guy. I loved how as the interview went on his playing just started to flow, its like going to a Mule show, you know by about 4/5 songs in the big guy will be cookin!

  • One of my absolute fave live ABB shows was in Knoxville, TN, October 13, 2009. Jack Pearson even showed up for a few songs. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen. Mountain jam and whipping post when they all 3 start trading licks and really cooking

  • This was great, thanks guys! And – To Warren’s Little Feat comment – Absolutely yes!! Got to see them a couple times in the 70s and still talk about how all the tempos were slower, more dug in, even heavier than the record versions, sure made a lasting impression.

  • Warren is so kind and talented. Years ago, he made my oldest son's year. We were standing right at the stage and Warren bent down and handed him a pick. Eddy was speechless. Great memory.

  • That was fantastic. I love how awestruck and respectful they are with Warren in the room. Also how down-to-earth and gracious Warren is and how he answers every question thoroughly and insightfully.

That was truly wonderful. The whole thing warms my heart and makes me smile.

  • @thatpedalshow so cool that Warren was right beside you and the insight shared. When I was growing up as a young guitarist this was something that we just didn’t have access to. Such a great resource for guitarists.

  • My favorite tones of all time. Omg the money I spend trying to sound like Warren. Lol

  • Is it loud in the room? How does volume change in the room, Warren playing at with guitar volume on low, and then when he turns up the guitar volume. It's hard for us to understand with compression at our end. Thanks

  • This was the most informative Pedal Show episode yet. Warren Haynes is a masterclass of information and technique. From simple things like remembering to back off on the guitar volume to standard tuning slide playing, it was an inspiration to watch.

  • I was in Dallas on business about 6-7 years ago and I saw Gov't Mule with Vintage Trouble opening for them. Absolutely killer show! Was cool to see all the different guitars he brought out. He really seemed to enjoy the Firebird.

  • Love your guests recently. It's so awesome to see guys like Haynes, Gregory, and Ford on the show. Would also love to see you guys sprinkle a few more modern players in here and there. Loved when you had guys like Rabea and Lee Malia on as well as when you have the more classically oriented.
