It was the year pop went crazy. Michael Jackson dropped Thriller, Kenny Rogers danced with Dolly Parton, and Run-DMC kicked off the golden age of hip-hop. New bass heroes rose up – Mark King and Pino Palladino among them. But if one bassist owned 1983, it was Kajagoogoo’s Nick Beggs, as the bass intro behind their biggest hit testifies.

In this video, we break down the GREATEST synthpop bass line of 1983. We’re also giving you a FREE workbook where we’ve added the tab and notation.

  • I was 10 years old when this was released, brought up on Adam and The Ants and Electro. Later in life I was into dance, rock, metal, indie, Goth…this bassline is just the most amazing bassline I have ever heard and it just oozes 1980s with the synth layer behind it. Incredible art.

  • I’m pretty sure that when Limahl left Kajagoogoo, they dropped the googoo and carried on as just kaja.

  • Someone has to design an effects pedal based upon "Too Shy"..Check out the work that he did with Warren Cuccurullo on the Thanks to Frank CD that was released back in 1996.

  • You guys should do Ooh to be ah too. I don't even know why that song isn't as popular as Too shy

  • It was only the single version that was slightly sped up not the album version as I recall the ‘White Feathers’ album is the correct A tuning

  • The slap part sounds like the bass line to "Paid In Full" by Eric B aka "Don't look any further" by Dennis Edwards.

  • Never heard of this band, but I like what I see. The synth is not my wheelhouse but I still see why you like the bass.

  • Chorus has to be the best advice given….it took my bass to the next level.

  • Finally….Credit for Beggs and this ultimate bassline. If I ever needed a bassist, this would be my audition piece for them. What happened to the outro?? My fave part!!

  • This is one of my favorite 80's bass lines along with Rick Anderson's bass work on The Tubes "She's a Beauty"! I love the 80's!!

  • The Wals had amazing filters, but what will really freak you out is an Alembic Series II, which is much like the Wal filters, but on steroids! I've got an Alembic Distillate, which has pretty much the filter section from an Alembic Series I, but the Series II is really incredible! And also, don't forget Nick's excellent work with John Paul Jones, Steve Wilson and my favorite, Steve Hackett in Genesis Revisited!

  • I wouldn’t say the best of 1983 because there was lots of great bass lines in R&b and funk music

  • I love it when an '80s pop song is far more insane than it has any right to be, and I love living long enough to see these songs being fully explored.

  • Sorry I'm only a casual viewer of this channel, but who's the other guy? It feels like one of those cheesy radio shows where they add a second announcer to try and improve the dynamic but it doesn't work. Just my opinion…

  • I’ve been hearing some killer bass lines from these 80’s pop songs recently. This person at work plays this style of music at work. Some of the bass lines are killer.

  • It's amazing work. This however reminds me the time the song was playing on my cellphone, and my singer friend absolutely laughed at me liking "Too shy" (I ignore why, she has 'squarer' tastes than me!). And of course, my response was: "Hey, the bassist was a BEAST!" ????

  • I remember going into Andys Guitars, Soho, this guy with a spiky bleach hairstyle and toggled ends round his neck. He was playing a natural wood Gretsch bass, after seeing Kajugoogoo on Top of the Pops I realised it was Nick Beggs.????

  • What's freaking me out about this is I've never actually paid attention to the bass line on this until now! Amazing. I'm going to check out more of his stuff!
