  • I guess I can't exactly shed light on the given question, but share an experience.
I feel like having the exact problem with enhanced gain every time I use a loadbox and IRs as well – No capturing needed. When I compare the signal in the room to what I get in my headphones, the digital signal sounds always gainier. Never found out why – but it's not speaker breakup gainier. Would love to learn why.

  • Enjoyed the video, thanks Rhett. I've had the chance to talk to Michael and he's an awesome guy! His ToneX captures sound excellent too…

  • Capture is A feature i dont think it is THE feature. I bought mine to experiment with different sounds and not have 20 amps sitting in my house. I have my EVH 5150iii for my prime sound, but i love that if i want a JCM 800 or Fender sound i can plug into one thing. Yeah yeah yeah "its not the same!" but i also dont care. It's close enough for what i use it for. I mean plug in a real amp on stage and plug in the Tonex and ask how many people in the audience noticed a difference.

  • I can imagine that the shared sonic difference of the Tone X and the Quad Cortex compared to the real amp is due to impedances. If you‘re sending line impedance (60k-66k ohms) instead of instrument impedance (1.5M-2.3M ohms) the modlers will probably behave differently than the amp. I’m however no pro in this matter, i could be completely wrong haha!

  • Check out the global setting for Input Trim and the gain on the patch itself.

  • This just came across as whiny, and I usually love your insight on tones. It just seems like it’s as easy as saying lower the input trim to lower the capture gain to match the amp. No big deal.

  • The note tails are also messed up on the tonex and quad. The real amp has clear concise note tails that sustain perfectly. Both emulators chop that and add noise. Even a good analog amp sounds better than either.

  • Tonex is junk. I wasted money on that crap and now I just use a Boss Katana Mini for everything and it sounds better and lighter and less expensive and even battery powered.

  • What are the pros and cons of mic'ing the cab vs using the output directly from the amp as the capture source signal? It seems to me that mic'ing the cab would be less ideal and more prone to creating poor results ?

  • Just download the god damn Matchless independence capture from The Studio Rats and be happy guys ????????‍♂️

  • Hi Rett

Hi Rhett, it's great to hear a video from you about this topic!

We captured a lot of amplifiers in the last years and found that once the chain is set up, exactly measured point by point, and precisely balanced, the results between the different devices are very, very close. The NAM often sounds a bit more open, while the QC is usually a tad less vibrant for example.

Our advice about Tonex, if you're interested, is to work with the plugin first and then, using a DI, compare the same sound on the pedal to find the exact Input Trim value that works for you. If you get the sound right with the plugin after calibrating the DI and Reamp Box, you just need to match the pedal to the plugin ????

Each device has its pros and cons (and the Tonex app definitely doesn't shine, especially in usability with the physical pedal), but we're confident that with some dedicated time to explore each aspect of profiling, the results will be excellent!

In case you're interested, we've just released a video on our YT channel where we reamp a simple DI and showcase the differences between the real amplifier, Tonex, Kemper, Quad Cortex, and NAM profiles.

We love what you do and always follow your content!

  • I am having a similar (or same) problem with my Fractal FM9. Not within the context of a sound profile capture but rather the mere fact of putting the signal chain through the box, changes the gain value. When trimming the input gain level it removes the added saturation but it sounds anorexic. I am starting to be suspicious of the A/D and D/A converter technology simply not being good enough to truthfully represent the sonic content of the analog world.

  • Reading all these comments about what the special rain dance might be to make tonex software actually work… WHY ARE WE TORTURING OURSELVES?!?
You know what 'just works'?… Kemper.

  • … I spent like a whole day tying to make a profile with tonex, and I just couldn't get it to work. Not worth it, I'll just use my kemper thank you

  • This is kind of overthinking it. Whether or not this capture was identical to its source is a separate issue from how good the ToneX sounds in general. ToneX sounds and feels like a real amp—and it takes pedals just like real amps. I don’t capture, I buy other people’s captures (Tone Junkie!) and they sound miles better than anything I have in bedroom. It’s now the only thing I run for live, studio and practice. The longer I play it the more I like it. In my use case it is dead simple, 100% reliable and sounds exactly like I want it to every time I call up a preset.

  • I will not buy one, because if I do not like it or don't use it, then when I sell it I have to pay IK Multimedia to transfer the registration and software licenses — which was the case with something else of theirs I have. It's a token amount really, but a dick move I think. I have other gripes with IK, but I'll leave it at that. Italians should know better.

  • i just ordered one so we will see, but I think the opinion of this post that the Quad is better; I think that's completely silly because I believe there is a slight pricing diff. Slightly.

  • This was the first thing I stumbled upon when I got my ToneX. The fix is easy. When profiling, ignore the level indication in the capture. Set it by ear,. It will complain that you should set the instrument input higher. Again, ignore it and have it generate that profile. Problem solved.

  • So I have some thoughts.

    1. I run into the same issue with the plugin sounding different than the pedal and I wonder if it's a difference in impedance, rather than gain settings. I'm also using UA hi-z input. Maybe a DI box would yield a different result?

    2. With regards to capturing, I just don't bother. I didn't with Kemper, I didn't with Quad Cortex and I don't with Tonex. No matter what it's a pain unless you have an expensive setup.

    3. When I'm using the Tonex, I'm not looking for it to match my amp, or someone else's amp. I'm looking for a tone, and I dial based on that. I have really good Dumble/Orange/Soldano captures I use and I dial them for what I want, edge of breakup clean, crunch that's fuzz friendly for doom, and high gain modern metal. I'm not surfing captures or trying to get the most accurate capture, I'm just looking at it as a tool to serve a purpose.
