We Were Right About the Gretsch G2220 Junior Jet – Humbuckergate Finale – LowEndLobster Investigates

Hey everyone! We were right about the Gretsch G2220. Gretsch has updated the specs on their site and many retailers are following along.

EDIT: I accidentally said they were both ‘neck pickups’, I meant to say they were both ‘bridge pickups’. We still not have seen a single example of a ‘neck’ pickup model in this bass.

  • Gotta say that I'm actually super surprised that Gretsch not only corrected their mistake, but are making reparations for their mistake!
So stoked about this and you should seriously be proud of uncovering this and highlighting it, Will!
I'm ready for Detective Lobster merch????

  • I need to replace the volume pot on my Gretch 2220. I'm considering swapping out all the controls. Maybe even eliminating the switch for another volume. As well as a different capacitor. Can you please give me advice on this?

  • Gretsch should build those mini humbuckers and send them to all of us who thought were buying a humbucker packed bass!

  • I think you should review Gretsch products if they send them to you. But take them apart all the way on camera.

  • Thanks for getting to the bottom of that! I was just about to sell mine so this is a perfect time to check in with Gretsch/Fender to see if they are fessing up. My good man, I hereby owe you a bowl of lobster bisque. Happy Holidays to You and Yours!

  • Can you tell me what the pot values are? I need to replace the volume pot and there are no numbers on the original pot.

  • I'm glad to gear they finally accepted the truth. Can you tell me if the pickups are opposite polarity so that they act as a humbucker in the middle position eliminating any buzzing?

  • Thanks for running this down. Unfortunately, Gretsch is not responding to my query about this. (I bought a Jet Junior bass for my daughter, with the understanding the pickups were humbuckers.) Has Gretsch said anywhere that they are offering offering the $100 voucher? Or has that just been a word of mouth? I tried the customer service email, but as I said, I got no response.

  • Thanks, L.E.L. I scratched the Gretsch from my list of short scale basses. Sticking with Fender and Music Man….

  • I am a big fan of Lobster and he did a great job exposeing the bucker debackle but this bass is still awesome. Forty five years of playing bass and owning everything with four strings at one time or another and I can say it's a great instrument. Age and injury forced me to sell my EBMM and my beloved and heavily toured Ibanez prestige 3000 to search for a light weight 30 scale alternative. I auditioned several basses and kept the Sire U5 and this bass and of the two the Gretch wins out as my main bass. It sound great, plays great and covers all styles of music and the price is simply hard to believe.

  • This proves we bass players need you guys (@LowEndLobster, @Jonny Dibble, @Bully Thakidd, @PatrikcHunter, …) to continue these video's about basses and bass gear. Respect !

  • I tried one last weekend, I was surprised by the tone of that little thing. The neck is maple, I dunno, what kind but not the Acer Saccharum used by Fender, and denser and harder than the Jay Turser one. Still very pleased with the tone. That's what matter after all. It's innexpensive so I'll get one next month. My 12th bass and 3 short scale.

  • Way to go, Lobster! I have one, bought second-hand, frankly, because I already had the matching six-string. I like it the way that it is, so I don't really care if they're hummers or not. It has a great sound and playability, except for being pretty heavy for onstage use.

  • This deserves more notice. Low End Lobster needs to make frequent visits to the White House where he can administer needed changes and strict supervision over the Prez, the VP, the Senate, and Congress, and all those little 3 letter agencies,, just in case any funny binniss should be attempted, like what happened ago. Thank you.

  • I have just stumbled onto your YouTube channel while looking for reviews of other guitars and imagine my surprise when I say my own Gretsch G222 Electromatic Jr. I was, as they say, "shocked and appalled" at this obvious "bait and switch" fraud … and one from my beloved Gretsch company. I was going to gift mine to a friend's young daughter as I was never a bass player really. I'm disgusted by the trolls' comments, very impressed with your knowledge of this instrument, your integrity and your willingness to go up against Gretsch and Fender. $100 bucks, true, is less than it will take to repair and replace, but yes, it is something, as is your decision not to review until they fess up. I stopped at your channel, after the lobster paw and your opening salutaion — I needed a good laugh. I love Maine lobster ( and Maine – Florida sux – and I grew up here) as well as honest reviews that don't go into egotistical rants and incorrect info. You, Sir, are to be commended, as my father used to say. Thanks. You certainly took the high road on this. Maybe you should change your handle to HighEndLobster — you deserve it.

  • Well done for taking Gretsch to task over their mis-selling.

However, being from the UK a $100 voucher for Gretsch and Fender products is worse than useless. Even if they gave me a voucher in British pounds, the leading music stores wouldn’t accept it. Bummer!
