????Description: The Les Paul Professional was a sister model to the Les Paul Personal which were two precursor models to the more famous Les Paul Recording. These guitars utilized Low-Impedance electronics to deliver dreamy clean tones with many different tonal options. The Les Paul Professional was the “lesser” version missing many layers of binding and the XLR microphone jack. It is akin to a Les Paul Standard where as the Personal is the Les Paul Custom.
In tonight’s episode we document the Les Paul Professional to its full extent as well as document the rather humorous tale of how I acquired this one.

It really is a beautiful example of this model… Congratulations trogly
Here’s some speculation: Could Jan Akkerman’s modded LP Professional have been the basis for the Hagstrom Swede? Hagstrom is a Swedish company and, of course, Jan Ackerman was Swedish. The shape of the LP Professional and the Swede are very similar. The Swede has two hunbuckers. Ackerman reportedly played a Swede at one time, The Swede also had a tone switch that added either of two capacitors to the circuit. Perhaps Ackerman liked some of the Decade switch tones, so that’s why the tone switch was added. I have a Swede that was made in Indonesia after the company was resurrected. It has the tone switch. It has several features that are improvements over the original. Again, the Swede theory is just speculation.
in the May '75 issue of Guitar Player, Jan talks briefly about that guitar saying he "had everything taken off of it and maple overlaid on the body". He doesn't say if it was a Professional or Personal but it's clearly a Personal ('70 or '71 he thinks) as the neck has the block inlays and the the split diamond headstock. More than likely that three pickup model is yet another one that he had extensively modified.
That guitar looks massive on you Trogly.
I just put an olive drab Gibson sg up on reverb . I hope someone like Trogly buys it . ????
EMG were originally called Overlend. Then they changed their name to Dirty Works. EMG was the name of the pickup.
As far as I know they did not make the Gibson Les Paul low impedance pickups.
I bought a Professional back in the 80's for a great price as a backup for my 70 Deluxe. Both guitars were very heavy (but that really wasn't a "thing" back then). I hated the Professional because of the HUGE output change if I switched guitars. Otherwise, it sounded fine. Serial Number 90205 if anyone out there owns it now.
Why no measure of pickups?
My first electric guitar was a 1983 Gibson Les Paul studio Alpine white. That guitar suffered an unfortunate climate issue aboard an Amtrak train that derailed in the Siskiyou mountains back in 1985. I could never keep the dang thing tuned after that. I traded a friend of mine that Gibson for a Stratocaster. Long story short, I love Gibson acoustic guitars but no longer own any Gibson electric. Staunch fender man here and have been for years now. Norlin era must’ve had a few jewels, although I’ve never witnessed one. Thanks Trogly! Love what you do!
Trogily: "If You Are Just a Player".(?)!. I missed this statement. .Music is ART and Science supporting Musicians…Not case Candy and unboxing videos. Trogily: " IF you are Just a Player" is WHY I don't subscribe to your channel. Sorry, All the musicians that I HUMBLY Serve "ARE JUST PLAYERS".
The decade switch may not be functioning as it did when new due to capacitors that are now over 50 year old. I don't think you mentioned it but those pickups are 'stacked' humbuckers. It was a short lived configuration.
Mike d cody one of my ol buddys had a nice recording model.
Weres the i on the gibson logo?
Kind of a rat move by the original seller. I would definitely put him on "the list". I'm glad you got it finally.
terry kath played one.
I want that guitar, Trogly! I've been looking for one.
I can change and solder in new pickups, pots, caps, and output jacks, but Hoover be DAM if I could wire that thing!
I ended up with a Les Paul recording guitar and bass which was named something else in 73. I honestly didnt really understand the electronics, but couldnt get much tone out of it. Both were really heavy and the bass was really u n balanced, neck dive.
The horn looks very Gretschy to me.
Wow, I've always been curious about the Les Paul that Jan Akkerman used in that live version of Hocus Pocus!
Thank you so much for clearing that up! ????
Cool guitar. Should've thrown a LP Signature in there too! ????
Love the wood grain
Happy about the trussrod cover !
This model sounds pretty damn good.
These weren't successful because too "hi-fi" thin sound, without warmness or real personality, plus it's heavy ! Pretty looking however.
Jan Akkerman, what a sensational guitarist
So now you have to get a Recording. Own 1976. Have yet to ever hear that decade work. So interested in seeing that guitar get into your hands. I have been told it needs to go through on mixing board to get it to work. Even have that transformer which doesn't help any. Seen that new Recording video but decade has been discontinued on it. So waiting on the Recording to see more information about it. ????????✌️????
That headstock logo seems to be missing the dot over the letter i.
That ding is like the wart on the Uncle Buck teacher. Maybe a professional touch up?
11:36 double jointed or a nasty accident involving a car door?
Thanks, Les, but no — I think I'll just keep playing my old-fashioned, high-Z pickups. … And 12 pounds!? No wonder I favor Strat-oids so much!
Steve Howe used a Les Paul Recording on “Cactus Boogie” on his second solo album ???? Wonder if he ever used one, or a Professional on any Yes tracks ????
The GIBSON logos on the pick-ups have been embossed (raised) here Austin – You're likely more used to the engraved or debossed (depressed) look of the logo on other models….????
Sounds killer
That was very informative thank you. Love the clean tones, they have real sparkle to them
Great video and thanks for sharing ????
Playing those low Z guitars are alot of fun especially if you're into playing clean. The tone switch is actually for pre- sets of tone in 1&3 #2 opens up the whole board and I like how you can use the Bass pot for like a secondarie volume and in your lower settings if desired requires turning up the amp with those tones. Very interesting guitar.????
Trogly, you use more of a classic style distortion. I'd be curious what this exact model would sound like run into a Dual Rectifier or this new stomp box that came out at the beginning of this year from MXR, the pedal version of the Rockman X100.
Sounds really smooth!
Respect! As a Doyle, retired Neuroscientist Physics Professor… I have the complete set of 1969 Low Impedance guitars…, and then some. over 50 Vintage guitars in my workshop (I be Old Mark, Music Hoarder) All my instruments are repaired players' grade, and used to teach Music Science at local schools.
Guitars are for creating MUSIC . .. except for my personal… 1969 Personal. (Joke).. We plug the low impedance guitars directly into the AUX input of any music device on the Goodwill shelf: a Car Stereo, … any old $3. stereo with Surround Sound Sounds Superlative …friggin' AWESOME (Huge Smile).
Low Impedance pickups Distort JUST FINE, if you toss " following directions" and think inside your BOX, as Les Paul Did! or the Beatles ( No. 9 ,..69-.. 1969….Yellow Submarine, Nowhere Man, That's ME!! (Huge Smile)
Gibson also sold the LP-1 Crossover Pre-amp in true DISCO colors. I posted a video of the Gibson LP-1 on my channel, … and Yes, I also let my Cat play these rare guitars. I will gladly share the instruments from my workshop with those who help Teachers!
But we NEED MORE COWBELL! (Huge Smile)! PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL , TEACHERS, and PLAY MUSIC!! Our Kids are our Nation's greatest resource! Respect!
Thanks so much for what you’re doing on this channel, sir. Love the history lesson and the demo.
