Sweetwater Sales Engineer Nitish Kulkarni gets down to the basics of what a preamplifier is, and explains when you would need one.
Wondering what a preamp is? In simplest terms, a preamp takes a weak signal from a microphone and makes it loud enough for you to send through a mixer or recording interface without introducing excessive noise into the signal. Preamps are often found in mixers and recording interfaces, and there are even standalone desktop preamps as well. When you get into standalone preamps, you can choose between tube mic preamps or solid-state preamps. Tube preamps rely on vacuum tubes to amplify the signal, and as the tubes have signal pushed through them, a pleasing distortion is added to the sound. Solid-state preamps use transistors to amplify the mic signal, and tend to sound cleaner than a tube-driven circuit.
Some preamps are modern versions of classic circuits that are famous for adding a distinct color to the sound, while others are prized for being transparent, passing signal with virtually no coloration to the sound. Whether you’re looking for something that leaves its mark on the tone or lets your sound shine through unfettered, Sweetwater has the right preamp for your studio. Be sure to call your Sales Engineer with any and all preamp questions you have.

Lots of words with zero useful information. Watched the video and now I feel like I even unlearned the stuff I already knew.
I would like to see a video that explains how an amp "colorizes" music. I've heard people say, "Your receiver puts out a warm sound, not colorized." What does that even mean? ????????????
this was so repetitive oh my
my next Surface project , a bi amp version of the Dynaco ST-70 .
Very good and clean explanation, thank you!
Great Video! Thanks for all the helpful info!
What is the difference between Shure SM7B and Sm7DB build preamp which one is better for a YouTuber?
I'm using a Soundcraft 16-channel mixer with JBL PRX 800 series tops and subs. Is it safe to connect bass guitars and electric drums directly to the mixer, or could that overload the system and cause issues with the sound?
I was expecting a different accent. Thank you so much for this.
Loved the video. I was wondering whether you could share your thoughts on a hi-fi system that uses a tube preamp with a solid state amp. Do you still get the same harmonics with such a system as a pure tube setup? Cheers.
Good explanation thanks
So informative
Use less technical terms please
Hey there Sweetwater. I hope that this finds you Well & Happy too. Question for you: I have 6 Loudspeakers that are all 4 ohm impedance. I have also found an 8000 watt Pre-Amp that is a 6 Channel Receiver. Am I going to be okay with using this to drive a set of 6, 4 ohm speakers? I've become so confused with Impedance, watts required, etc. that I don't quite know what to do here. Can you please help me with this? Thank You in advance…
Great video. Thanks.
This guy is Indian, I respect his opinion.

Hey, I really like the song playing in the background at the beginning of this video. I can't find it in the description or the comments, I also tried shazam with no luck. Please let me know it would be much appreciated.!
A transducer is also a non binary or gender fluid producer.
This doesn’t answer the question
Hello, I'm a proud Sweetwater customer. I'm trying to run a neve 1073 through my SSL big six. How would you connect this pre-amp?
So I have this orange crush mini amp, and it has a output jack on the back that I use to plug into speakers and other combo amps.
I just did a show where I plugged it into the clean channel for a line 6 amp and it made it sound louder and fuller.
Am I using it as a pre amp or is the mini amp acting as a pedal?
I have passive bookshelf speakers, dac, and amp for personal office music. Does a preamp add any value?
Thank you

"Sales Engineer" one syllable away from Social Engineer
I read about 100 comments just now. I noticed that the majority of them are people asking questions. The reason for that is this man really did not explain what a pre-amplifier does, what's the difference between a preamp an amplifier, a signal processor, a mixer, and do I need any of these? People are still lost. That's what happens when somebody talks but they really don't explain. Perhaps he should go into politics.
I started selling and then repairing audio equipment starting back in the 80s. If you really need help the best in the business is Crutchfield. They have an extensive Library on everything including, car audio, speaker components, wiring, installation kits. The best part about them they never push a sale on anyone. Just call the 800 number and ask away they are extremely friendly and helpful and carry a full line of anything you can think of as far as Electronics is concerned. Name brand equipment only no garbage. I didn't hear any explanation here about what a pre-amplifier actually does. What the differences between a pre-amplifier a signal processor and a mixer is. Anyone that has an amplifier and does not have the answer to this question will never understand. Unless they're shown or told by a professional.
God bless Crutchfield Audio. They've been around forever. Also have a money back guarantee. I do not work for them.
The average newbies will ask the same question. If all they have is an amplifier.
Do I want a preamp? Or do I want a signal processor. I'm surprised you did not speak on that question. I heard it every day when I was selling audio equipment. Almost forgot, can i just use my mixer ?
