What to upgrade first… your bass or your amp?

One question that comes up over and over is…

“what should I upgrade first… my bass or my amp”?

I have a really strong opinion on this topic – so if you’ve ever wondered what and exactly why you should be choosing one over the other… this video.

In this video I’ve also got the amazing Damian Erskine with me.

He’s been in the studio with us recording a brand new course for the membership here at ScottsBassLessons focusing on his amazing plucking hand technique… if you’re a member, keep a look out!

You can see him in action using his unique plucking hand approach in this video + we also get to check out the custom made pickup ramp he has fitted to his bass where both pickups are moulded into one single piece of resin… it’s hard to explain in text, but you can check it out in the new video.

Bass vs amp, how to play chords on bass, the 3 finger technique… it’s all in there.

As always, I’d LOVE to hear back from you guys… when it was time to upgrade your gear, what did you decide to go for… bass or amp… and why? Make sure you jump into the conversation in the comments!

See you in the shed,

Scott 🙂

PS. HUGE thanks for all the amazing feedback about the new course we released into the ScottsBassLessons.com membership last week – “Slap Bass Fundamentals” with Phil Mann

From the feedback we’ve received over the last few weeks you guys have been LOVING it!

  • My least favorite thing about "professional" set ups is how many times over the years I've brought a bass in and said "The action is exactly where I want it. There is a buzz spot on the 12th fret on the d and g string. Please check the level of that fret and grind it down to the same level as the other frets."

In the last 35+ years I've attempted this 6+ times. EVERY time I get charged for a set up and handed the bass back with the buzz spot still there, no fret work done, and the "professional" telling me they "just had to adjust my action".

  • amp..a bass only has a few controls where as an amp can have a dozen parameters that will help you get the sound you want

  • Go and buy an ALL TUBE AMP I'm 55 and for 30+ years as a hobby player wasted so much money looking for a solid state that sounded nice and they don't.

  • I use a Sterling Stingray 4, along with a Hartke HD150, would it be okay to upgrade my bass for my next investment rather than the amp? I’ve been eyeing an Ibanez BTB I’ll admit….

  • Classic example of the comment section being more informative than the video.

    My advice:
    1) Upgrade your bass first and get a quality pre-amp/DI.
    2) Forgo the amp altogether & get an in-ear monitor system which are far cheaper (and lighter). Your sound engineer will thank you for having less volume on stage for them to deal with. What's more, your back will thank you and your load in/out time will be cut dramatically.
    3) New strings.

  • I ve got the habit to use 3 finger since the first time i pick up the bass. I never knew many bassist uses 3 fingers. For my personal experience is just Something natural dued to the coordination with the left hand which uses 3 finger.

    I love Scott!

  • Cheap basses have come a LONG way. Get a good amp, maybe some pedals, and give yourself some good output. Tone has also come a long way, where you can get the sound you want on even a crap Amazon bass.

  • But here, in argentina, a squier should be the upgrade bass, i have a passive cort action precision jazz, it's fine, but i play since 3 yeas ago and i have not cash for upgrade mi amp :'v

  • I kinda agree unless you only play at home for your own pleasure, then I say upgrade your bass first, because you want to enjoy playing your bass. If your bass sucks to play it will sit on the stand and not be played.

  • OMG. Basses come from factories?? Not brought by angels from heaven? Are you gonna say next there is no Santa or what???

  • No one has ever told me that my playing sounded expensive. On the other hand, I get compliments on my playing all the time, and comments about how cool my $200 and $300 bass guitars look. (Almost no one will know how much you spent on your bass, but everyone will know if you suck at playing it)

  • How about a video on what is needed amp wise for a gig.
I already have a great bass. I do not know what amp rig I should have.

  • James Jamerson played with one finger. I think that might be just as hard or maybe a bit harder to master than 3. I used pluck with just my index finger years ago(depending on what I was playing). Bottom line: Playing with two definitely gets the job done and if it's not broke, no need to fix it.

  • Come on dude… I used to love these bass videos, but now there’s always 30% of none sense before we get into the topic
