I agree with you 100% about Prince.
I completely agree with your Prince take. That solo always felt completely out of place to me. He wasn't playing the song, he was showing off. It was just crass.
Of course, I never liked Prince very much, and always wondered if my dislike had colored my opinion of that solo. I'm glad to have it validated by a good guitarist who is also a Prince fan.
Erik Mongrain
Overly pay musicians and movie????
In the video I really like Aman Toofani's showman ship he really made the crowd go wild but that is not the best guitar playing but I will give him one the better showman who knows to please the crowd
I so agree on Prince here
Lol Paco De Lucia exist and they pulled this guy for best hahaha hes doing a basic rumba imo
Bravo for your honesty sir
Roy Buchanan: Royz Bluz on the 1974 album Livestock. My personal best piece of guitar playing.
My favourite guitar video is probably Garu Moore playing "The Messiah Will Come Again" live on the famous Greenie. It's absolute magic and no guitar solo has ever moved me like that one
Different styles move different people. All this competition based stuff is a waste of time, there is no world's best guitarist, only favorite guitarist.
I went to listen to the Jeff beck video and got bored really fast. It was too repetitive for me ????♂️
Trucks transcending genre and indeed instrument by sounding like Ali Akbar in places.
for the first video shown i left a comment years ago on in the comment section of it saying that he wasn't actually that trained in the style and that it takes years just to train your right hand technique. so many ppl got butt hurt from that comment… if you've exposed yourself to high level spanish/flamenco/classical guitar for years then you would notice it. but that right hand technique gets emulated so many times by street performers/non trained players – some years i have even seen it from guitarists playing on the street in my city – but is still praised by so many uninformed people who think it's executed well because it sounds technical.
Derick Trucks, meh, nothing is impressive about that solo to me. As for Clapton, the most overrated guitar player in the history of guitar players…
No Tommy Emmanuel or Mateus Asato?
dude the prince solo is pure soul, there's a lot of space in it, it's great, clapton can go sleep, stop drugs. How can you say this equal 1/32 notes of Mancuso is amazing and the prince solo is bad ? If you listen the whole performance, it's an amazing crescendo build up that never stops getting bigger and bigger it's genius and breathtaking, it lifts up the whole song, i mean just look at the attitude of the guys playing with him, they are ob the moon. And just make an analyse of the whole solo. It slaps bad. Hes not just running a pentatatonic, he builds the motion and adds a lot of tension and love to it. Just listen, close your eyes and listen with no pre judgement
Mateus didn't make it in? ????
Hey, man, everyone's allowed their own opinions. You like what you like and there's nothing wrong with that. As Dennis Miller once said "That's why they made four solo KISS records".
I agree with all of them man, the flamenco Harvard dude is all theatrics no tone. Shredder dude sounded like a bunch of noise with no structure.
He loves the phrase, "Under your fingers."
I agreed with your calls, especially on Prince the noodler.
No Tosin, Javier Reyes, Guthrie Govan, Alan Holdsworth, EVH, none of that?
The most memorable instrumental offering by "Prince" is still nothing more than aggrandisement of another's creative ability.
I guess you’re more into TikTok acrobatics….
I like Clapton's version too…
Everyone is missing what’s so “special”about Prince’s guitar solo.
It’s about Prince being Prince.
He can get up on a stage with Rock legends and still stand out, he had that much charisma and talent.
When have you seen a person lean so far back he’s going to fall off the stage, but have his “man” there to hold him up, that’s classic James Brown performance drama!
If you’re looking at the solo from a purely technical standpoint, you’re also missing it, the solo, at the same time, fits the song perfectly, and is still extremely musical(another Guitar YouTuber breaks down it’s musicality)but still feels dangerous and improvised, while still distinctly sounding like Prince.
NONE of you could do that, because NONE of you have that distinct and signature of a sound & style, that someone could just listen to you jam a solo over a Beatles song and say “that’s so & so” playing!
It’s rarefied air to have your guitar playing be immediately recognizable.
Trucks is just not human. Seriously that guy makes me feel things I didn't know I could feel.
Hey I know you and Brandon are both trying to make a living but I wonder
Between you and his 50 week guitar stuff who class is better for me?
I think I am intermediate but I am all over the place. I got my grandpa chord down I can play bar chords. I just need to be around other guitarist and to be pushed. But what are your thoughts?
Guitar moistcr1tikal
Hendrix shouldn't be on the list as he played an upside down guitar. It's not fair on people who play the guitar the right way up. You can't compare those 2 things.
what do you think of marcus king?
IIRC Hendrix named Manolis Hiotis a Greek bouzouki player one of the best he's seen. Loved that he named a foreign player on another instrument as an influence
WHO plays that on 1.58?
She is also good guitar player, singer and musician ????➡ #MegMyers ????????
Yes I agree with you. I think most people look at technical ability and execution more than finesse. A good example is Santana. He may not be a great technical guitar player but that guitar is an emotional extension of him. Really something to see live. Steve Vai is also an under rated finesseful guitarist in my opinion.
Great. Now please do Terry Kath and Roy Buchanan.
I agree with basically everything you said. Very rational and logical takes.
I would never call any guitarist the best. There's no best guitarist and there never will be. Good guitarist make it their mission to enjoy what they do every day, and ideally keep innovating until they can't play any more.
The whole idea of 'best' is completely subjective, but for my money, Guthrie Govan is the most complete guitarist in recent memory. Virtuoso chops and incredible improvisation skills, he's on another level.
