As I settle into my current version of “what’s enough?” I realized that I’ve circled back and rebought two pieces of gear that have become my “daily drivers”. So when is it ok to revisit, refresh, or rethink what gear is doing it for us?
I don’t know about you but I could use a hand with this question.
So come with your stories,
Keith

  • Gibson L6-S. Bought it three times. The first time it was 2004, and it was a Gibson that I could afford. I was disappointed because it didn't sound like a Les Paul. Bought another one in 2021 for more than twice than what I paid for the first one, but I was older, and knew not to compare it with a Les Paul. Actually gigged with it and thought I saw what Bill Lawrence was shooting for with his crazy wiring ideas. Sold it when the price of Gibsons benefitted from the COVID craze. Bought one a third time because I saw how much hate they got in some recent vintage Youtube videos (It's the contrarian in me.)

  • P90 guitar. I had a Reverend Contender P90 years back. Really liked it. Sold it to get a real Strat. Couldn't afford both at the time. Just bought a P90 again and it is just so good! Eastman Juliet P90VR. Nothing wrong with a Reverend, they are great, but have fallen down the Eastman rabbit hole. So much guitar for the money especially buying used.

  • The only rebuy I think I would do is the white Hondo Les Paul Custom copy from 1977. I had been playing a Strat-style guitar with a tremolo and just couldn't get used to having nothing under my right hand. Fast forward to today to three Epiphone Les Pauls and two Danelectros without a trem in sight. My changing technique and what felt comfortable in my hands has guided my choices.

  • When I first started watching your channeled you were very strict with little gear. Also do you think ibanez is getting under the bus in sales and popularity?

  • I’ve repurchased several pedals years. It didn’t take me long to remember why I sold the first time. No regrets giving them another shot but my first instincts were usually correct for me.

  • I can empathize with guitars looking at you accusingly. I’ve been building instruments for the past few years and those guitars, ukuleles, banjos and tenor guitars absolutely look at me. But I don’t sell them. The investment I have in them is mostly my time.

  • Sometimes I think of what I should get next, then a good pedal arrives and I’m having fun. So I forget about new gear for short while. Usually the guitar I keep is the most playable. Or it’s simply that circumstances mean I now get to work upgrading a guitar that is already great. I rarely rebuy something. ????

  • Not buying your pedals. I’m living true to your words, as little gear as possible ????????

  • I owned a Guild X-175 with two P90s. I got tired of blending the pups so I sold it back to the store I bought it from. It hung there for nine months until a luthier friend told me he could just add a master volume to it. I bought it back, added the master volume and it’s been my #1 since. No more blending issues.

  • Never rebought a guitar, only ever sold one, and it was a cheap acoustic I never bonded with.
I consider the next guitar I got my first guitar.
Never had any desire to rebuy it.
    But hey, that’s me.
I play all my guitars with no plans to sell.
But I have sold pedals, no desire to rebuy them.

  • I've not sold and re-bought anything yet. Yet. I recently sold my '96 Heritage H150. Great guitar, Bare Knuckle The Mule pickups, Jimmy Page wiring harness. Had all the tones. Unfortunately it also had all the weight. 10.5 pounds.
It was too heavy for me to play standing on a regular basis so it just didn't get played.
Lately I've been wanting another one.

  • The only guitar that I sometimes regret selling….is my Hamer Sunburst Archtop (it's been know by a few slightly different names over its life). I decided to sell one of my Hamers….either my Special FM Quilt top in Aztec Gold or my Sunburst Arch Top with a Flamed Maple Top and their "59 Burst". I originally thought it wouldn't matter which one that I kept. Loved them both! The Sunburst Arch Top sold almost immediately, so I kept the Special FM…..and I discovered that I really did prefer the carved top Sunburst Archtop better. I sold the Special FM a few years later. I still haven't replaced the Hamer Sunburst Archtop, but I've "looked" longingly a few times.

  • I sold an 89 Epiphone emperor II (pre joe pass) to a friend of mine, then bought it back a couple years later.

  • I played a Strat and JCM800 Marshall combo in my long-running band. I sold the Strat when we broke up.
I borrowed a Tele and a ‘76 Les Paul for the next band, then sold the Marshall when that band broke up.
I bought acoustic guitars and a lap steel for the next band and played the steel through a 5w Champ.
I later replaced the Marshall with a 15W Fender Bassbreaker because it had the Marshall feel with 50% less deafness.
I sold that and then rebought it.
    I’m on my fifth Strat.
(I’m also on my third Rickenbacker throughout the forty-odd years I’ve been playing.)
I think I need to sit pat!
