  • I think most people don't know the difference between a gain control and a volume control, and they have issues because of it. Gain controls can only be put on the input section of any given component. They have the potential to distort/overdrive the signal if pushed too hard. Guitar amps are the only type I can think of where you would want to do this on purpose. Volume controls can only be put on the output section of any given component. The big difference between the two, is you can't distort the signal with a volume adjustment. It doesn't matter where the knob is set. Only too much gain can distort the signal. That's why gain staging is so important.
