Is that Steel Pole Bathtub at 8 mins?
I wish bridge pup was not single coil. Hum is bad where i am.
I managed to ignore Yamaha basses for several years until one caught my eye in a local guitar store. After a few minutes of playing I bought a BB734 that was on sale for $670…an amazing bass at a fantastic price.
Never had a Yamaha Bass, but I have a Yamaha Trombone, and they are very high grade intraments. We were looking at getting a baby grand piano, because it sounds very good, but my wife decided to go with a Stienway EX model. I think the price was a bit better on the steinway and the sound was just as good. I am looking at the 304 series, I am not a fan of the chunky necks, but the 434 looks great.
My Yamaha BB435 is tonally different than Fender PJs, but can be EQ'd with different strings (eg. flat wound) to cut the highs and low-mids. It's more aggressive sounding, which is what I wanted. sells new for $100 more now than it did in 2022, so used prices are more than I paid for it BECAUSE it's oen of the best values for semi pro PJ bass you can get. And I don't sound like anyone else, so I can craft my own unique sound.
remove the pickguard and it kinda looks like Krist Novoselic's Black Eagle bass
Hey I noticed you did a review on the Sterling Sting Ray as well. Do you have a preference? I'm really debating over the two of them. I love the humbucker sound in the Sting Ray, but you made this Yamaha sound amazing as well. I mostly love playing hard rock, so I like that darker heavier bass sound.
Do you think it’s better than your stingray?
I tried a new version of this bass about a year ago and was not totally impressed. Just picked up a used one at a great price and it’s fantastic. The used one was already good out of the box, and with an upgraded Gotoh 404B0-4 bridge and careful set up it’s great. The first one must have been a bit of a dud, but the second one is a winner.
3 years later and they are now 660 quid new. Wild stuff
Is the fingerboard lacquered or satin?
I have a Yamaha Tele style guitar that is better than any Tele I've played, my Dad plays Yamaha saxophones and trumpets and I'm looking at the BB as my 30 year old Squier P-bass needs upgrading. You can't go wrong with Yamaha, even my first motorbike was a Yamaha (although I became a Kawasaki fan)!
Out of interest mate what monitor speakers are you using? Recommended? Neil
Thanks for the great review, I have a 735 coming tomorrow so I'm pretty excited.
Love your reviews, you're really good at it
指弾きやスラップ奏法しかせずにレビュー動画と謳っているクソみたいな奴等と違いピック弾きもしっかり細かく行っていてとても素晴らしいです
The level between the E and A strings seems extremely uneven in every example.
Yamaha multiple BB owner since the early 80’s here. Pleasantly surprised to see the maple fingerboard!
A couple years ago I started playing bass again after 20+ years. I went the the BB235 since I didn't want to spend too much getting back into it again. Honestly at 1st I wasn't too impressed, maybe it was the tight string spacing or that I was new to the 5 string, but I really warmed up to it when I put some flat wound strings on it. Since then I bout a old Yamaha SB500 a couple Sires, a Greco VB, a Grover Jackson and a Peavey T40 (which is in safekeeping with a friend and haven't played yet) to replace the one my ex wife pawned. The BB is the one I grabbed most often off the wall.
I recently got their TXR504 I think they were called? their version of player series fender jazz basically, $600 or something like that? It is made in Indonesia, obviously for the Russian market because everything is in Russian on the back, not that I care.. 🙂 But anyway, it's got some of the same nifty details like the large space for the truss rod. I mean I need to slack the neck of the bass and crack it open a bit to do that on my old Fender P. It's a whole project… It weighs like 3kg, feels like a guitar body with a 24fret bass neck attached, it's very different from the Fenders I've played almost exclusively and I've never been happier. It was half the price of my cheapest fender.
I owned this bass for two days during a trial period. It seems to be made of quality material, but was let down by a poor setup and feeling a bit unfinished. Maybe I’ve been unlucky, but I haven’t been so impressed by the basses I’ve encountered that have been made in Indonesia. A Cort action bass and the Yamaha BB434. Both were in need of a setup and the neck on the Yamaha felt a bit rough and unfinished, but the Cort bass was 1/4 the price of the Yamaha so that seems acceptable at such a low price. I had two and now 3 FGN basses. Yes they are a bit more expensive, but well worth the extra money in my opinion. Maybe I was just unlucky, but I was not exactly impressed with the copy I got. Luckily I was able to send it back and find a used FGN P-bass that I like a lot more. From the comment section it seems I’m in the minority and most people love this bass.
I have a TRBX 305.
It’s an amazing 5 string bass it also comes in 4 string 304
I dont think i have ever played a BAD yamaha instrument. These guys know quality
Very nice review !
You mention it is beefy, do you happen to know its weight ?
Any nose dive on this model ?
Id really like to have it and i cannot find a place to try it on before purchase :S
I have had several Yamaha basses over the years. While they all played perfectly and are made well they somehow all managed to miss the mark on sound. The BB series is just an ugly version of a more elegant Fender P/J -Bass in my opinion and they have gotten just as expensive as buying a Fender in many cases. The old TRB series was a great bass but still had that odd sound that I couldn't live with.
squier has newer strings?
Cats just be doing random shit
I bought the BB734A and am amazed at how good it is. My only grumble is that, as a flat picker (mostly), I'd like the strings a little closer together at the bridge end. The range of tones available and the playability are phenomenal. For a bass that comes in at well under £900 including a decent padded case, you couldn't go wrong, it's a bargain.
Holy shit that growl is awesome. I'm in love
Paul McCartney played one in Wings for years and no one thinks twice to say, want a piano – get a Yamaha. I think it's just something that only recent generations began to overlook.
This is a terrible video and should be banned. One of several videos that made me buy this Bass today from Sweetwater. I didn't need a bass. I have a Precision. Now I have a Yamaha BB434M. Not fair I had to pay extra for the M. BTY only one other M model and is the same price? That made me want it even more.
BB434 Maple or Rosewood, which one is better?
Just bourht one 539 +tax, about 600 total . Sweetwater has the best deals , GC 599.00 + tax, 8-26-23 . Love it
Always been a massive fan of Yamaha basses. My first one was a Yamaha BBN5A, a cheaper version of the Nathan East signature, killer bass.
If you haven't yet, you should try their TRB 1000 series for a great modern sound
I love the growl of these Yamaha PJs. To me they are the only who compete head-to-head with Made in Japan Fender PJs like the Boxer. Can't wait to get my hands on one of this, or maybe the fantastic BB2000. What a bass!
Bought myself a BB from 2003, not a top of the range model but ive wanted one since i learned about peter hook. Supremely playable instrument with some diverse sound options
