  • Watching Phil's show is a luxury I am glad to be able to afford. The value for the invesstment is outstanding. I saw a Bently SUV commercial while watching a recent Phil McKnight video. First of all I dont think I have ever seen a Bently commercial (and I worked for Bentley in the early 2000's – so its something I would probably remember). I think its pretty cool that a top tier car company chose a top tier program to align with. Phil……."you have arrived." Awesome job!!! All the very best to you!????

  • my personal favorite guitar player really likes an engle savage, i've never played through one myself, and i know that no matter what i play through, i just won't sound like gary holt, michael amott, dimebag , etc,,i'm a true believer that most of your tone really is in the player

  • Shame about Ovation, I bought mine in the late 80's for £450 in Birmingham, UK. Loved the sound, I could get and the finish to the neck and headstock. Crazy the way some companies can buy up and then trash other brands, which have their own creativity and skilled craftsmen.

  • Fender bought the Guild Westerly RI factory and knocked it down, so no Heritage redux situation developed re Guild.

  • Not Command! Kaman owned Ovation. Charles Kaman is the person's name who invented the Ovation synthetic bowl design. That is called the Lyrachord design or bowl. It is made of composite material like resins. And some carbon fibers. He owned an aircraft company an experimented with materials to created a better lighter more resonant guitar. Glen Campbell was the first to own an Ovation guitar. That's where I saw it in 1975 and bought one. The Ovation Custom Balladeer Deep Bowl in a beautiful sunburst finish. I still have it. It is basically a dreadnought design with a beautiful sound and I'd put it up against a J-45 any day.

  • I like the Danelectro 12 string. They are cool and a good price. I really like the Squier Jazzmaster 12. I Also like the Squier Bass VI.

  • I find that a guitar which doesn't demand↨my attention but falls into line as I attempt to play along with artists (either myself, or others or a recording) is key.

  • On the Boss pedal question…the secret to working with noisy pedals is to go into them with a higher level. Think of a pedal as having a “noise floor”. In this case, the noise floor might be only 40 dB below guitar level, so your signal to noise ratio (S/N) would be 40 dB if you go in at guitar level – not so great. And you can gate it, but you can’t suck the noise out later to improve it.
But if you boost the input to the pedal by 20 dB (more like line level), then your S/N goes to 60 dB and you probably won’t notice the pedal noise. All pedals I’ve owned can accept the higher level.
You must use a good low-noise booster. I use an Empress ParaEq with Boost, but I’m sure there’s many others.. Hope this helps.

  • @PhillipMcKnight How about some Know Your Gear official neck shim cards? Add cut line markings for various popular guitars to help first time shimmers.

  • It's rare for me to go in a store and find a lefty to look at. It sounds like perception of lack of demand may be a factor?
It's such an issue there are now online shops that only carry lefties but that still means you can't get a feel for it to see if you like it before you buy one. From what you said it sounds like maybe we lefties should be going in our local shops and asking if they have any instead of avoiding them because we expect them not to have any?

  • Thanks Phil great show. I love listening to your podcast on my ride to work. Is the video where you trade guitars to guitar center out? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks Phil

  • My dad worked for Kaman, in their industrial parts division. I can confirm your pronunciation. I have a Hamer USA Studio Custom purchased at the employee rate. Really wish I got more 🙂

  • I'm with you Phil on the 8g stings on your twelve string. I have a custom electric 12-string guitar that I put 8g strings on and they play and feel like butter! I'm sticking with them for sure.

  • Phil, had to come back and say I got a spark go last week because you always have such good things to say about it. Absolutely love it, thanks for all the honest reviews. best travel amp i have ever owned. Way more tonal options than I expected and theyre better than I remember Biasfx2 sounding. Plus the secondary bluetooth speaker inside makes playing along to youtube easier than on my computer even. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

  • My suggestion would be to check out the suona series by fender if you haven't yet. I've never seen you mention them, but they are special. semi hollow strats teles and j basses, alder back, roasted maple neck, ebony board, but the highlight is the italian spruce top sourced from the exact valley in italy that Stradivarius sourced all his best violin wood from. There is something special about them, a warmth a sparkle I haven't heard outside of vintage instruments.
