Why I NEVER Use Amp+Cab on the Helix or HX Stomp

For my Presets visit: https://johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ Had a question about why I tend to separate the Amp and Cab block when I build presets in the Helix or HX Stomp. There are a bunch of reasons that I think this is probably the best practice, here I try to share those reasons.

Feel free to ask any further questions if you have any?

Let me know if you want me to drop this preset into the folder.

I’ve decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 – https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=CCTNL7P2XSQDC – I will then email you a link to both bundles!

You can get my EXPRESSION patches in this bundle using this link – I will then send out the patches! https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=3PUJ7M8YPS4WU

Try my patches (60-70+) for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link – I will then send out the patches! https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=45L8AZ4RYL3HW

  • I wish there was a way to split the two afterwards. It'd be nice to select a combo just to get a taste of the sound first and then split them.

  • Hey John. I have ordered all your Helix packs. But today I am not after sound, I am wondering what systems/scales/patterns you use in your soloing? It's smooth and delicate. I am just keen for what goes on in your mind when you play. 😀

  • Where does line6 account for power tubes. Is it in the amp section or the cab section. I’d hope it’s the cab section that has power tubes so you could do wet effects after preamp and before power tubes.

  • Why do people shake the guitar like that, it does absolutely nothing and is very annoying to watch. Sorry not trying to be rude. I've been playing guitar for 30 plus years….

  • Line 6 helix should be paying JNC for doing all these. he sells more of these units. If Tonex pedal was smart they would pay him to do stuff with their Photo/type/tone captures to bring them up to a more usable product. IF THEY WERE SMART!!!!

  • Let’s take some time and just appreciate how sick & bonkers this little pedal is???? I’ve seen it so many times and it is probably properly hyped but damn… Line6 really nailed this.

  • Thank you for these insightful tips. Your approach makes a lot of sense. I like how a separate amp and cab/IR allows for auditioning of different sounds. Moreover, I like how it allows for placing effects between the amp and cab/IR like one could do with an analog amp FX loop or placing effects after the cab/IR, as if one was adding sounds from a studio mixing desk.

  • Hi John, question: I currently run a Ampero II Stomp in 4cm with my Mesa Boogie Mark V 25, and a Celestion V30 1×12 cab.
I mostly use the Mesa preamp, and the modeller for effects.
However, I am quite intrigued by stereo, and combining multiple cabs. I don't really know what speakers to use in the room to get proper sound through. I recon I need 10-12 inch speakers to have proper bass response? What speakers do you use? Or do you just record in stereo and play in mono?

  • Another nice trick between amp and cab is the legacy tube compressor. Feels quite natural.

  • Do you have any videos on setting up a preset as quickly and easily as you do?! I know repetition is part of making it look easy like you do, but gosh the manual doesn’t seem to explain as well as I’d like.
