Paul McCartney, Lemmy, Chris Squire, Cliff Burton, John Entwistle, Phil Lynott, Robert Trujillo, Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes. At some point or other, these and many other household-name bass players have wielded a Rickenbacker 4001 (1961-81) or its successor the 4003 (’82 to date), and what a joyous noise they make, too.

Sure, the Ricky looks a bit nuts; certainly, it sounds a bit eccentric. But it’s a stone-cold classic bass guitar that cuts through the most unfriendly mix and will be your friend for life. Don’t believe us? In this lesson, we’re taking on some of the Rickenbacker’s greatest moments. You’ll also get note-for-note breakdowns of bass lines on which the Rickenbacker really shines.

  • Such a fantastic video! Thanks for showcasing the Rick and a few of the greats who played one. I know vintage Rickenbackers are sought after…this video makes me wonder if things changed over the years dramatically – my 2017 Rickenbacker 4001 doesn't sound quite as rich or varied from pickup to pickup. ???? I may give it a thorough listen, tweak my amp, and try Ian's tone trick. Cheers!

  • The roundabout bass sound is the pinnacle of Rick bass tones! Instantly hooks you in!

  • You only have to listen to the sound of Paul in the live "Wings over America" to see one of the singularities of this instrument!…

  • I had a Maple Glow when I played Pro in the VA Beach area. 4001 had a single truss rod. Bought it at Audio Light and Sound for 600 dollars new.

  • @devinebass On the subject of the Rickenbacker…. Can you PLEASE do a deep dive into "Jive Talkin'" by the BeeGees. It has got to be one of the most unique cool tones to come out of a Rickenbacker and one of the grooviest funkiest basslines ever born and coincidentally born the same year as me. PLEASE!!!

  • Squires bass line in roundabout is the song. Howe is just playing a few harmonics and its that bass riff and tone (along with brufords drumming) that make it groove. Listen to the verse in roundabout without that bass (and obviously the vocals) and most people wouldn't even know its roundabout. You cant say that about too many songs… Leave out the bass and can you still recogize the song. On the flip side, you could just play the bass riff and everyone would know its roundabout. For me, Squires riff and tone fit the song perfectly. I cant imagine it any other way. This was the early 70s, squire was brilliaant and true pioneer. Listen to his bass solo on YesSongs from 1973… In fact, listen to any of the songs on YesSongs and you'll hear him changing pickups, using foot pedals for all sorts of effects. He also knew where and when to use the effects to enhance the song without getting in the way. At his peak and for that period in time squire was pure brilliance.

  • Cliff Burton had a Gibson sg bass pickup put in the neck pickup and a guitar pickup I believe placed under the bridge. He used Morley wah fuzz and electro harmonix big muff as primary pedals

  • I’ve always wanted a Rickenbacker…. But after reading all these comments, I wonder if anyone would be willing to compromise a little and try an Epiphone Thunderbird. I bought one about a year ago and have so much fun playing it. It’s the vintage pro series with the humbuckers and the separate bridge and tailpiece. I’d still love to get a RIC one of these days though.

  • The only thing Rickenbacker crushes is people's bank account(a plastic pickguard cover
    On the 4003 bass?!?)gimme a break….

  • I grew up listening to Geddy and Chris Squier, and was all about getting a Rick, until I played one. It just didn't work for me.
I'd love to see you guys dig into the old Ibanez basses from the 70's and 80's. The Musician and Roadstar 2 basses were really cool!

  • I had a 4001 for a while, then the band broke up , I started playing country, and sold it for a PBass. One of my biggest regrets. Not the PBass, but selling the Ric. Shoulda just put on some flats for the country gig and kept it. You can always find a good PBass.

  • Ok. I’m currently looking to add a Rickenbacker to my arsenal. I already have three basses. I don’t need four basses. I barely played the three I have!

  • Scott Devine, Your Ric is not set up right !! your E string is choked, check all the screws are tight on the bridge, also check the nut slot is not to tight on the E string, if those things don't help adjust the neck. I am over 40 years playing these basses and own many, that E string is so weak sounding. also try different strings.

  • My 4001 & 4003 have Badass II bridges put on by the same luthier that put on Geddy’s and that is the super upgrade. Sustain, low action, and finally a correct intonation on a Rick. Nowadays you can get a bolt on high mass bridge from a couple of manufacturers so no permanent modifications required. Try it for next a next level Rick!

  • I have been convinced of that for many years and now I'm even convinceder.
