Why This Is My Favorite John Mayer Performance (EHX MicroSynth, Keeley Katana, Way Huge Aqua-Puss)

John Mayer might be responsible for reviving the relevancy and excitement around the electric guitar. Though it never disappeared, in the early 2000s, it was overshadowed by the samples and beats of the pop industry, but because Mayer never stopped fronting his career with guitar, and his presence and popularity within the pop scene helped bring the electric guitar back to the forefront of music. Love him or hate him, John Mayer deserves to be listed among the guitar hero greats. Join Josh as he watches what he considers the turning point for electric guitar as John plays at Austin City Limits.

  • Another incredible moment (significantly smaller than JM, but still note worthy) for guitar history was when the band Mew came out with “The Zoo Keepers Boy” … it would be awesome to explore their use of Baritone guitar & drive ????

  • I was really worried that after this those Microsynth pedals would skyrocket, but I found a V3 a few days ago here in Oz,, at a decent price, IN THE BOX ! In the goddamn wooden BOX Josh, suck it, with the correct power supply, always elusive and it's in the post. I've been haunted by this tone for years. It will now be mine, bwahahahahahahahahahahahhaahha. !!!!!!! You are right about the descending lick at the end, it's just beyond fantastic

  • This is such a great vid.

Love your observation about him giving into the SRV influence. Those moments SHOULD be welcomed. Love it.

  • I was a skeptic until the first song of JM Trio as House of Blues in Boston. Then I realized he’s one of the best players ever.

  • My favorite record: Born & Raised. On par with Harvest Moon, American Beauty, Blood on the Tracks.

  • Austin City Limits is my all-time favorite live performance of John Mayer. I felt he was “ in the pocket “ on every tune. I wish I could have been there.

  • I saw this tour in Sydney in a small theatre – it was amazing ! After this John was in arenas so I feel blessed to have seen him in a smaller venue.
    Amazing band too

  • 08:54 : cannot agree more. It's no surprise John keeps David Ryan Harris with him since his early live stages. I met David twice in Paris (solo act in 2018 and with The Scary Pockets more recently). He his HuuuUuuuge. DRH is the best polished diamond ???? artist on the circuit. He is so smart, cool, and a very down to earth guy. In my top 5 living musical artist for sure.

  • John Mayer’s “Covered in Rain” live at Oak Mountain from “Any Given Thursday” I would argue is his best solo and just listening to it will always blow me away

  • at 3:58 on this video it looks like the other guitar player has a silver klon on his board, maybe thats why JM got one afterwards?
