Why this is the Ultimate Marshall Amp, and how to set it up!

In this video play my favorite Marshall rig, the one that nails the most classic 60s, 70s and 80s tones – a 1977 Marshall JMP 50W Master Volume (2204) through a 1971 Marshall 1960A and a Marshall 1×12 model 1933 with a 1971 G12H30 55Hz. This is by far the rig that I use the most and the rig that comes closest to the Hendrix tone, the Zeppelin tone and the NWOBHM tone for instance. At 12:22 in the video I go through how I set up the rig, in terms of knob setting, mic positioning, panning and discuss my philosophy when it comes to this amp. Let me know what you think! Let’s go! 🙂

  • I’ve got a JCM800 2204 and it’s been the main amp since 1987. I like to take the volume and gain both to ten then back them both back slowly at the same time until it stops hissing. I noticed that yours doesn’t hiss. Has it been modded? Even my new SC20H hisses in exactly the same manner…..

  • I have a 1977 JMP 2204 2×12 combo (purple!!) with two G12Hs from the 70s. I like running it with 6CA7s in addition to the usual EL34s. To my ears, it sounds best with the master volume all the way up! This way, the output tubes are driven pretty aggressively. I would love to hear a demo or, at least, some kind of discussion of running a 2204, this way. It does make the amp really loud, though 8)

  • Are the voltages really the only difference between these and the 800’s? There are no other circuit differences? I read online that there were circuit changes half way through the master series production, like in 1978. So that, and my own ears, has always led me to believe the early 2204’s are very different from 800’s.

  • What is the point in chasing the perfect tone when you can`t be in the same room with the amp without earplugs? You might as well cover up the speakers with sheets of plywood..

  • In the summer of 1980 I saved enough money to buy my first tube amp. In July, just after my 16th birthday , I got on the train to pick up a brand new JMP 2204, together with my older brother. It was a very hot day and we had to walk back a few kilometers from the guitarshop to the train station and then from the train station tomorrow home ( again a few kilometers) the amp was super heavy so our arms got longer and longer. I still have that amp today. It’s totally stock, original caps ( in good shape) , original tubes and it still sounds great. No clipped bright cap either. Never will sell that amp

  • "why this is the ultimate Marshall amp…" is wrong , it should be : "why this is my favourite Marshall amp" .
In the description "the ultimate" is changed into "my favourite" .
Not aware they are two different statements used interchangeable . Not good thinking .

The first question one should ask oneself in any discussion , a basic rule of Philosophy : is it an opinion , a matter of taste , or is it a fact .

My favourite Marshall tube amps are the JCM 800 series , the JCM 900 a good second .That's my opinion .

  • I'm late to this video, but to be clear, this is the 50W Master "Volume" 2204 (JCM800 style preamp circuit) not the 50W Master "Model" 2204 which has that odd preamp where the channels merge with the two 100k resistors before the gain control?

  • Johan, Awesome video and the mic setup and placing was was very helpful. In the 4 x 12 are all the speakers the same and what makes the left lower speaker better sounding? Is it just soldered better?

  • I still like the 2203 better . I like how the bass and gain reacts with the extra headroom . I have a 1978 . Love the video

  • I would try it cranked with a 2 x 12 Greenbacks cab….that should come close to a cranked 100 watt with 4 x 12….but better for the neighbours 😉

  • Great. If one wants to know how these original amps sound, you channel is the one to visit. So great and so true to those original.

  • Hej Johan!

  • People seem to think the mv doesn't work so well on these for some reason, but it does. Very well. I have gotten great tone for years at home levels with my 2203x.
