Why you SHOULDN’T play a P bass

Let’s get this straight – the Fender Precision is the Holy Grail of bass guitar. All the ‘best’ ones were made in the 50s and 60s, but they’ve barely changed since, and they are still used by heaps of top bass players the world over. In the immortal words of Spinal Tap’s Nigel Tufnel, “This is the top of the heap right here.”

But while some people consider the P Bass to be bass perfection, others might beg to differ. And during the course of today’s video, I’m going to run through my 5 pet peeves about the Fender P.

It’s the world’s go-to bass, and for good reason. But has the Fender P got enough to win me over?

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott 🙂

  • Fender Precision with flat wound strings and a foam bridge mute is The Bass. There is no reason any bassist worth their salt shouldn't play one.

  • the P bass can do everything I need. roll the two knobs to 100% and rip em off. My fingers and eq can do the rest. If i can't play it with a P bass and make it sound good, it probably wasn't good in the first place, subjectively of course.

  • Guys like this remind me of the story about the African explorers who were sitting around the campfire one night with a tribe they had discovered that day. One of the explorers commented on the sound of drums coming from far away in the jungle. For hours the drums continued their incessant beat but no one on the tribe seemed concerned in the least. On and on they went for hours without stopping , but the tribe remained completely indifferent to the sound and seemed almost comforted by it. Suddenly, without warning, the drums ceased their beat. Immediately everyone in the tribe began to panic, running around in circles, screaming and moaning and making panic stricken entreaties to their Gods for mercy. One of the explorers managed to grab one of the villagers and ask him what was happening? "THE DRUMS HAVE STOPPED!" the tribesman answered. "So?" the explorer replied. "What happens now?" "BASS SOLO!!!!"

If you want to play lead guitar, play lead guitar. It's a bass and should be respected as such and played like one. Properly played, by someone who understands it's role, the bass provides a vital, necessary function in any musical lineup. It creates the connection between the drums and the rest of the band, using rhythm and melody to link all of the units together into a cohesive framework. Too many current players let their ego and their need to show how good they are or how fast they are overrule this principle and the results is usually a hodgepodge of competing egos, each trying to outshine the other, with the music becoming the casualty.

  • Whant to hear something that will make your skin crawl? Normal people, meaning non musicians, normies.. Dont care and cant tell, as long as it sounds good. They really dont care. They cant hear it, they all sounds the same, and it matters zero to them. I know it sucks.. We spend a lot of time and money on this gear and they could care less. I like a P bass with flats, I like an SG for everything else.

  • To me a Jazz bass just sounds like Seinfeld, but the P Bass sounds soooo funky and amazing so the P bass is the only thing I want a bass to sound like ????

  • I honestly get a pretty good slapp tone out of my cheap PB Shorty with Chromes. Chromes are a really excellent "in between" option, less "clangy" than roundwounds but the smoothness of flats.

  • So, why should someone play it? Just because you like it's classic unidirectional limited sound?

  • you can't play the false harmonic in portrait of tracy. it's too muffled. 100% you need the bridge jazz pickup.

  • I tried both yesterday in a shop. The P bass is straight forward. With some preamp you can modulate the sound.
Still I found the jazz more versatile. So I took the J bass 🙂

  • I highly disagree with the claim that the P bass only has one trick. Their sound is super balanced, which lends itself well to most all genres of music. You can get classic motown tones to grinding metal tones (Converge's bassist has used a P bass for decades and they have incredible, monstrous bass tones). Not too dark, but not too bright. They also sit incredibly well in mixes without too much tonal manipulation.

In summary, I'm going to play the shit out of a P bass.

  • If you are a "Journeyman" Bass Guitarist you already have a good Fender P Bass. If you still have questions about having one, You Are A Newbie or a Hack but that's OK, the music world accepts talented Amateurs.

  • Got to say I disagree with you. I think any bass can do anything any other bass can do. Just my opinion.

  • Way ahead of you, I bought a P Bass and haven't touched it in months. Because I'm terrible at follow through on learning new things.
