The Yamaha THR5A has been designed to be the portable practice and home recording amp for the acoustic guitarist. Lightweight and compact, with a stylish retro looking design and easy to use layout, the THR5 houses two 8 centimetre speakers and kicks out 10 watts, that’s 5 watts per speaker in stereo, the perfect volume for home practice. There’s a single input for a guitar, so no microphone input on this one, and a mini jack auxiliary input, so you can make the most of the stereo speakers to play along with backing tracks from your phone or MP3 player.
Where the THR5A differs from most other acoustic amps is it’s clever onboard digital processing, something that Yamaha call Virtual Circuit Modelling. This means that as well as the direct signal from your guitar’s pickup, you can blend in a choice of 5 virtual microphone and amp simulations, which include models of condenser, dynamic and tube mics, adding a kinda professional recording studio sheen to your acoustic tone. On top of this, to enhance and shape your tone, there’s a wide range of studio grade effects including compression, modulations, delays and reverbs, and best of all, when connected to your computer via a USB cable, the amp acts as a basic stereo digital recording interface, allowing you to easily record great sounding guitar tracks without having to worry about mic’ing up your acoustic or using any external effects, and if you’re new to computer recording, the amp comes bundled with a simple version of Cubase recording software to get you started.
Other essential practice features include a built-in tuner and a headphone socket, plus you’ve got the option of powering the THR5A with AA batteries, so it can be used pretty much anywhere. So if you’re looking for a small, lightweight practice amp, that’s pretty affordable, easy to use and makes it really easy to record your acoustic guitar, go and check out the Yamaha THR5A.

Can I use for an electric violin?
Anyone know what song he plays at 4:18 ?
Many thank for this great review! Could you tell me, could I use it for monitoring too? I see, using the speaker ( as monitoring) and the phone output in same time?
Nice demo!????????
wish it had a mic input
sounds great
It can be used with an electric cord or with a battery. Is that correct?
Is it loud enough to use for busking like the Roland Cube Street?
How does the Yamaha APX T2 travel guitar with ART transducer pickups sound through it?
I have nad acoustic harp which I am thinking of buying a pick up for. I just anted to know is this amp any good for connecting pick ups?
Can you livestream with it???
Does it work with Sony Acid 10?
This amp sounds fantastic with a telecaster too if you want a warm clean tone.
Girl, you sound amazing!
So I have an acoustic and electric but I need an amp for both. Is is better to get the THR5 or THR5A?
How loud is it?
I have read that the chorus is always on on the THR5A …is that true?
Hi, thanks for the review and I can see you had fun playing around. Can I connect the output of ZOOM AC3 to acoustic guitar input like Yamaha THR5A or Marshall AS50D or orange crush Acoustic 30? The reason for this is I like the Shimmer effect (Pad) and would like to use it for professional performances with acoustic guitar amp….
Will this ruin my Zoom AC3 or acoustic guitar amp?
In other words, will such acoustic guitar amplifiers support line level input from Zoom AC3 (Left/mono OUT)
How to connect Microphone to the amp?
Will it work with IOS???
Thank you for that. It was very useful. What I need to do now is to hear the THR5A, BlackStar ID BEAM and BlackStar Sonnet 60 together so that I can make a choice. It would be very useful in future if you would include nylon strung guitars in your reviews of acoustic amps.
I would really like to have heard a nylon strung guitar used for the nylon option. Any chance of this?
just bought mine sound fookin ace
I have one. And when I mic it with SM57 and got thru the PA, it sound great!! Without PA, it's prefect for home!!
Really good sounding and versatile amp. Nice demo as always! Cheers!
I'm thinking about getting this amp
2nd ????
