Bought one over the weekend. 1st bass. Tried to buy a used Fender but the guy at GC said this was the
one to go with. (And for about $150 less). I have 8 other guitars at home that have frustrated the hell out of me but this is a new ballgame. It’s solved many of the issues that were holding me back on the others. Also, “taking lessons” online with the bass teachers has taught me more about the instrument and music than all the others had. I’m now using what I’m learning on bass and applying it to the bottom 4 on the sixes and middle 4 on the baritone. Really happy with the whole experience.

I bought this bass (thinking it had humbuckers) in Torino Green and love it! And why wouldn’t I? It sounds amazing. After finding out it doesn’t have humbuckers was surprising because this guitar screams. I have 4 short scale basses and this is my fave of the four.

    Great review ????

I'm looking for a bass with a single coil pickup in the neck position to round out my arsenal. Plus, I don't have a short scale. This may be the answer.

How would characterize the mid range of the neck pickup when solo'd? I ask because the amp sims have a scopped tone in this demo. In the DI sound bite, the mids sound balanced?

How is the weight compared to a "regular bass" (I have a Fender Squire jazz bass and it is too heavevy for me, since I am 71 and had an open heart surgery). What about the body size, does it feel and look like a kid´s bass? Thank you. Cheers from Brazil!

Wanted to grab a new bass to commemorate me and the guys finally getting together to play and i think I've settled on this one – always wanted a shorty and this seems like a good bang for your buck!

Great video. Love the energy, both playing and presentation. Just wondering whether you still have the Gretsch and if you still feel the same about it. Thanks.

Why do you guys talk about everything EXCEPT how it balances on a strap?? What’s more important? The knobs, colours, headstock logos or NECK DIVE? Playing bass on your leg will ultimately give you back pain because you sit twisted. Older guys always use a strap with a shorter length to get the bass off the leg and sit straight. How it then balances is critical to avoid back pain and improve technique.

I was in a pawnshop near Port Arthur today as they were bringing one out. I played it for three quarters of an hour through a couple of amps, then bought it for 220 dollars. I've played a variety of Fenders and Rics since the '70's, but arthritis has forced me to a shorter scale. I'm retiring my Jazz. This is a great little bass.

Thank you for doing your reviews by going direct and not through some crappy bass amp combo that really doesn't fairly represent the sound of the instrument……..nice work Sir.

Any thoughts on playing these half step down? Maybe even dropping the E strong to Db? ???? Asking for a friend

I was at the guitar store today and overheard a family looking for a short scale bass for their daughter who was just starting out. Unfortunately the only person available to help them didn't know much about Basses so thought I'd share what little knowledge I had on short scale Basses. They ended up settling on this model in black. It's nice to know she picked a good one for her first bass 🙂

Great. I have tried to find the WEIGHT of this bass, but it is nowhere to be found. Can anyone shed light on this, preferably in kilogrammes? Thank you so much. 🙂

Just bought one of these in Imperial Stain as a second bass.
Compared to my exquisite diminutive Ibanez MikroBass this feels like a huge monster. 🙂
Build quality seems flawless to me and it oozes character.
Slapped a set of La Bella 760F-S flatwounds on it, awesome punchy and on the front pick-up retro tone, somewhat reminiscent of a 50's single coil Precision.
Completely different to the warm, round mellow tones of the MikroBass with La Bella 760FS-S flats on it.
Only real drawback to me is that Gretsch is a hell of a neck diver.
I might put some lightweight tuners on it in the future…

Your review confirmed my “need” for this bass. I’m a pick player and think short scale basses are best with a pick. I wanted a Torino Green, but my local shop only had a new brown and a used(mint) red trans. Got the red trans for $230 out the door. It is now wearing my Union Jack strap which seems appropriate. I actually played it for almost 3 straight hours. Everything from Beatles to Clash to Maiden(gasp) to RUSH(gasp more).

changing tuners, to which ones? and truss rod adjustments, for more perfect intonation? so best to buy from a Store In person and get them to help with that? my sense of pitch would never catch that, but I know that playing on a slightly off pitch guitar will make a mess of ones ear

Love the video and how clearly you tested the diff sounds and had that up in the picture the entire time! very smart… love the insights and comments, and you have charm enough to make the strings play all by themselves, which doesnt hurt, even in a hetero world… also love that although the video has lots of persnality, you dont waste lots of time… I am looking for my first bass.. Doesnt the term JET come from other Gretsch guitars and btw, Lobster guy discovered that the pickups are not Real Humbuckers, so false add from Fender-Gretsch but everyone like the sound, regardless

Hey man, great video! I'm thinking about getting this bass and I was wondering if you have any recomendations of tuners to change the ones that come with the bass. You said that probably the thing that you'll most likely change were the tuners, so I was curious to see if you have something in mind or even if you changed them. Saludos from Argentina!

Oddly I've never really liked sunburst, but I must admit that I like it on this. The only other I like it on are teles. But both have similar simple body shape

Gretsch got caught out putting single coils in these and advertising them as mini-humbuckers (see LowEndLobster's channel). Gretsch have subsequently changed the specs on their website to "single coils".

Big kerfuffle right now about the pickups in this bass, not humbuckers but two single coil neck pickups.

It just came out that the humbuckers on these are fake and are actually single coils. Shame on fender and gretsch for deceiving their customers.

I got one of these the other day. Do you know if this is better than the Beatles hofner bass? Also is yours noisy?

Well, I thought I was gonna go for the Gibson tribute doublecut, but your demo tones are just perfect, and the pricing on this is ridiculous.

It reminds me of the weird scooped clangy sound that reminds me of 70s garage rock, gospel, self released disco. It evokes all that is dirttty in music. Super versatile. Especially for a two bass band or where the bass is the lead. And it comes in pink. I am in love. God bless.

Played 7 different short scale basses back to back and brought this Gretsch in tobacco sunburst home today. Of them all, she was clearly the best sounding with huge and punchy pickups with a giant range of tones from bright to dark. My only complaint is that there were a couple minor setup issues. Had a bit too much bow in the neck and needed a slight truss rod adjustment. Also had to file the low E slot at the nut, but nothing difficult to mend if you’re mildly savvy. Long story short, she sounds like a $1000+, but the initial setup is definitely a $300 bass. Breakout some tools and you’ll be delighted.
